Re: Initial mechanical timing question

I know a very late reply. Are the camshafts in alignment. Remember 2x crank rotation for 1x cam rotation. You may not be at 10deg on compression on no.1 cylinder which would make you exactly 180deg out.

Re: very high engine idle when hot

Many thanks all for your replies.
I shall check these issues. Yes there is a throttle jack fitted.
I shall report back but as the fault is intermittent can't say when.

very high engine idle when hot

My 89 se has a curious issue. On a very hot day especially in traffic the engine idle goes up to 2000-2500rpm. I first noticed it 3 yrs ago when in a market town on a very hot day. The engine temperature was at 90 degs whish is normal top temp. When I got out of the town and had a better airflow 50m...

Re: Use of Gunson 77066 for castor angle

On dismantling there were 2x2.5 and one 1.5mm at the front and just 1x1.5mm one to the rear. When I measured the castor angle it was O/S +3.5 deg and N/S 4.0deg, this would have been within limits. For no particular reason I split the shims equally front and rear1x1.5 and 1x2.5 each side. This resul...

Re: Use of Gunson 77066 for castor angle

Correction... the torque for the lower wishbone to chassis is 50lbft not 60, senior moment!

Re: Use of Gunson 77066 for castor angle

I think I can now answer my own question. I have a John Deere tractor which has a very large positive castor angle, so much so you can see its effect when steering. Placing the 77066 in position and moving the steering in the direction suggested in the instructions there was even on a small steering...

Use of Gunson 77066 for castor angle

Just replaced the ARB Bushes on front suspension. Aware that the shims perform 2 functions. 1 determine castor angle 2 provide correct compression of rubber bush. I fitted a 1.5mm and a 2.5mm shim on each side of rubber bush ie 4 shims in total. On checking castor angle using the Gunson 77066 tool I...

Re: Which Oil filter

I was heartened to hear about the Mahle OC141. I have been using these high quality filters for years but have been using the OC23. All attempts to source anOC141 have been to no avail. I contacted Mahle but as yet no reply. In the meantime I contacted Opie Oils and received the reply (very promptly...

Re: one cooling fan running when ignition on although cold engine

Many thanks Pete. It would appear that the diagram in the service manual is such a double output relay but the two I have with the 87a terminal are as you say changeover relays. Which work perfectly but are wrong type.
Looks like you have solved my problem. Once again many thanks

one cooling fan running when ignition on although cold engine

I recently replaced the nearside radiator fan as it wasn't working. When wired up correctly it runs the moment the ignition key is turned to the first position even though the engine is stone cold. The offside fan does not come on until the engine reaches the temperature to require it. Clearly the n...

Duckhams Q20w50

Since it has been reintroduced I use Dear old Duckhams 20w50 in my 2 elans. I have been using Valvoline VR1 20 50 in the excel but as the duckhams is available in 20l drums at a decent price I am tempted to use it in the excel largely as a simplification of stocks rather than cost saving. Dare I ask...

Yes Alan you are dead right. Although difficult to see in situ it would appear that the rubber base plate is missing. I do feel a bit of an twit for not noticing that myself.
Many thanks.

excel se wiper motor

Please does anybody know the lucas part number of the wiper motor. The one fitted to my excel is a lucas 60027021 but the round barrel appears to be of a smaller diameter than it should be as previous owner has packed the retaining clamp with spacers but the motor moves back and forward or should I ...

Re: Steering rack gaiters - what grease

I've used aerosol spray grease, it is semi liquid and is easy to use. Fit gaitors dry and insert spray tube between track rod arm and outer gaitor spray abour 1/2 the can withdraw tube and tighten cable tie type clip. Repeat other side.
