Re: Possible new law to force insurance of SORN cars
When my other halves folks lived in France, they had an old second car. When it was too far gone to keep on the road, they decided to just stand it up in their old barn with a view to possibly having it repaired/restored at a later date. Subsequently they didn't renew the insurance when it was due. ...

Re: 84 excel barn find at auction
Saw this one the other day & was shocked at the 21'6% buyers premium the auctioneer chargesHawaiis0 wrote:http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C833936
Most I've ever come across in a classic car auction before is 15% & I thought that was too much, it was a well renowned auction house though

Re: How to de-rust coolant tank?
Nope - just checked, that was a UK site the guide is on so must be a U.K. term. I'll keep looking. Hi Richard, I have a local DIY/builders merchant shop that stocks both the caustic soda & the spirit of salts, about £2-£3 each, if all else fails, I'd be happy to get it for you & post it on. I would...

Re: How to de-rust coolant tank?
Hi Richard, Have a read of the process for de-rusting & cleaning fuel tanks in this link, http://www.realclassic.co.uk/techfiles/petrol_tank_cleaning_and_rust_removal.html I've used the process with incredible results on many classic motorcycle petrol & oil tanks & can see no reason why it wouldn't ...

Re: A little help & advice please
Well I've been to Slip End to look at the black Excel & what a shame, it looks to have once been a really cherished car & well looked after, but not for a while now. It has been stood for 11 years, until last October in the dry, but since then has been stood outside. The foot wells were about an inc...

Re: A little help & advice please
Evenin chaps, I've had a long chat with the vendor on the phone & it sounds like it's worth a look. He's not available over the weekend, so I've arranged to go Monday with a fellow mechanic & Lotus man. He's happy for me to take my tools, jacks, compression gauges etc & give it a good check over, so...

Re: A little help & advice please
Hi Stu, Thanks for the reply, better late than never   I am still looking but not much new has come on to the market. I did spot the black ebay car, thanks, & intend to contact the seller with a view to going to see it, & I'm also waiting for a bit more info on a couple of others, one of w...

Re: Nearly bought another one
I did go to look at it, & glad I did. I nearly didn't bother as it was the thick end of 150 miles away, but I was really quite interested in it & would be nervous bidding that kind of money for something unseen. There's a brief description of it in this thread, towards the bottom of page 2 http://ww...

Re: A little help & advice please
Well Orsom, was it you on ebay tonight @19:32:12 GMT? :) No, afraid not. I decided on a price I'd be happy with given the work & expenditure it was going to require to bring it up to a standard where it would have made a reliable & tidy car, & it went for more. I guess the reserve had been set at £...

Re: A little help & advice please
Is it possible to see if door beams &/or window frames are starting to rust without removal of the trim panel or other stripping down of the door? I did have a good look at what little of the beam is visible & it all looked & felt solid, but obviously I couldn't start taking the door apart :? Cheers...

Re: A little help & advice please
OK, have been to see the car, & as is so often the case, there's a few things to sort out. The biggie for most I suspect, being the paint work. There is quite a bit of flaking lacquer, & whilst I except that I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to painting cars, I wouldn't be happy to do anyth...

Re: A little help & advice please
Well I'm firmly in the "K&N's have their place, but it aint on a Lotus" camp  I do have them on a couple of my old brit bikes, which didn't have air filters as std, & they are good. However, I think the plenum chamber is important on a road going Lotus, not least because of it's fire prevention...

Re: A little help & advice please
Hi all, Agreed the blue SA doesn't look to be a good proposition at that price, but it aint red  & if it was able to be bought for a good bit less :? The red one however, did prick my interest. I would expect & desire to go through the mechanicals, just to satisfy myself if nothing else, not ev...

Hello again chaps, Just had a few spare minutes to sit down with a coffee & thought I'd do a little more research, & google images led me to this, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1991-LOTUS-EXCEL-RED-56000-MILES-ONLY/361869899506?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%...
