Re: Front Dampers

I had ProTech make 600 series dampers with adjustable spring seats to take 2.25" 'race' springs, but I'm still feeding the spring loads into the chassis.

Re: Coil Springs

I think the 350/300 rate is for the SA with the heavier gearbox The auto box isn't made of cast Iron you know! The part numbers only differ between pre and post '89 cars, not between base, SE and SA. The note, written on a blank page at the back of the manual almost certainly refers to the spring/d...

Re: Remoulds

The Porsche 924 Cup race series ran a remould slick as a control tyre for at least one season (I think it was Colway and they were a Championship sponsor). The carcase on a passenger car tyre, is only really designed to have a fatigue life equal to the life of the tread. There's loads of margin thou...

Re: Anti Roll Bar bushes..

I still think the split should face the back of the car, because I think the ARB will be pushing against the front section of the bush under braking, although the more I think about it, the less certain I am. If you removed the anti-roll bar entirely, do you think the wheels would move backwards in...

Seat adaptors for 2/25" springs

I've just machined up a set of adaptors to use 2.25" 'race' springs, but still have the spring load go into the chassis (with the original rubber isolator) and not through the damper top mount.

Re: Coil Springs

Stock rates (pre 1989) are; 300 lb/in front 250 lb/in rear. I have a pair of post '89 rears and they appear to be a little softer. My '88 is on AVOs with adjustable spring platforms and 2.25" coils and a handwritten note in the back of the workshop manual that came with the car says; 350 lb/in froin...

Re: Hinge bush upgrade

The longer bushes mean the alignment is more critical. You could do the job on a pillar drill, if you can come up with some way of aligning the tube. A long rod in the drill chuck to align the bottom spigot would do it, but you'd sill have to have some was to make the spigots.

Hinge bush upgrade

I've just successfully reamed out the hinge tube of the door beam and installed much longer than stock plastic bushes. Igus.co.uk technical support advised me on the choice and said that these are the type of bushes that Lotus use for door hinges these days. In combination with a Stainless Steel pin...

Re: Steering Rack removal

Getting the rack out is easy if the radiator is out, which in itself is not that hard. Sometimes the long way round is the quick way. Of course, you might discover that your radiator is on it's last legs and have to replace it, but that's still much better as a planned job, rather than as a result o...

Excellent! Now you just need to get rid of the trunnions!
I've been considering it, but the trunnion threads are perfect, no wear and no corrosion.

I may have another pair of uprights that I'll consider modifying.

Elite/Eclat and pre '85 Turbo/S3 Esprit ARB bush elimination

It's not uncommon to find that the anti-roll bar bushes in the lower suspension arm have deteriorated to the point that the spacer tube has worn the hole in the arm oval and/or that the bush cups are damaged. The lower arms on my own '81 S3 Esprit were in very bad shape, due to the fitting of air-ri...

Re: Rear Suspension Spring mounts

I'll probably slice my originals with a razor blade and use cyanoacrylate (superglue) to bond them back together at a slightly reduced diameter.
