Re: Another timing belt question

They may not be available new, but often come up for sale on EBay etc. You’re most likely to find the generic BT-33-73f gauge. This is the same as the Lotus one, except for the dial scale shows figures, rather than the single mark shown on the Lotus one. The calibration can easily be checked. Thank...

Re: Another timing belt question

I assume you’ve not read all of this thread? All the info is on page one from Esprit2 I have read the thread, and Esprit2 post from earlier is helpful as it gives a recommended tension for the blue belts: > 82-85 Burroughs for both new and used Blue belts. However I don't have a Burroughs gauge, an...

Re: Another timing belt question

I didn't know about the higher spec HNBR belt, I need to do mine so will order this one over the normal T104 belt. Can I check what people are using to check tension? I've heard of people using a guitar tuner app on their phone, and then using the frequency of the belt when plucked. This seems like ...

Ok, thanks, I suspected at much.

I'll add dash removal to my todo list, but I need to finish getting the engine back together first!

How tricky is it to access the heater matrix on a pre '86 car?

I'm currently trying to sort out the cooling system on my 84 excel, and the previous owner has done some questionable things to the cooling system. They relocated heater valve to be under the bonnet, and I'd like to put it back into the interior, as it was from the factory. Can I ask has anyone done...

I should be able to make it to this, I was hoping to be able to take the Excel, but the engine is still in bits

That's great, thanks for posting the parts list.

I didn't realise that the online parts catalogue had exploded diagrams, very handy. I'll register for access to this as I'm sure it will be handy for the future.

Re: Power Steering Pump Pulley

If they removed the pump, then quite possibly they mounted the pump face A001 in front of the bracket A008 in the graphic below. This would account for 1/4 inch offset. https://ams03pap003files.storage.live.com/y4mqlyXei4ppAn0BnKuQIefBCmI4wfFPAZ5PJGdnNMn_ZpZHUmKJdGcncnVhT7y3mes_V8GMtXoReBO8-ncOP13V...

Re: Simplify ignition

I'm partway through designing/building a cam position sensor to enable sequential fuel/spark and coil-on plug. Mission creep? Surely not  Like everything it's on hold at the moment  Pete I'd be interested in to seeing how this goes, if you do it I'd be tempted to try something similar ma...

Is it possible to replace this hose fitting on the water pump?

Hi, I've recently managed to replace the moving parts of my waterpump by putting in a new shaft, bearings + impeller. Before I install the waterpump back on the car, I was wondering if the ~16mm diameter hose fitting can be replaced as the one on my pump has seen better days: https://i.imgur.com/V9b...

I bought mine from Lotusbits - it comes with new impeller, pulley flange and installation tool and has a good set of instructions.

Pete
Thanks, sounds like the one to get, I'll get in contact with them and see if they have any available.

Re: Waterpump dismantle tips?

Hi, My water pump has also seized also I'm also looking at refurbing mine. This thread is great, thanks for posting the guide and extra info. I was wondering is anyone has tried any of the rebuild kits avaliable, and if so how did you get on? So far I've found these, they tend to vary in price and a...

Cylinder Head flatness and roughness

I've currently for the cylinder head off my '84 Excel and it's recommended to measure for flatness before putting it back on with a new gasket. I now have all the needed parts, straight edge, feeler gauges etc. but can't find a spec anywhere in the manual that states how flat the cylinder head needs...

Re: Bubbles in the coolant tank, blown head gasket?

The CO2 tester finally arrived - After getting the engine up to temp it went yellow soon enough: https://i.imgur.com/f8LNpCs.png I relpaced the Head-Gasket a few months ago and chose this Gary Kemp MLS Gasket. Thanks, the MLS gasket that looks like the way to go. It sounds like it should last longer...

Re: Bubbles in the coolant tank, blown head gasket?

Looking at the colour of the coolant and the bubbles I think that is a failed head gasket Yep, I'm struggling to think of what else could cause this if it's not a failed head gasket, other than a cracked head but I really hope it's not that! I've only filled it with tap water for now for testing, I...
