Re: Senna’s Excel

Same car on this article. Bash https://www.motorsportmagazine.com/archive/article/september-1986/72/new-cars-lotus-excel-se Thanks for the link Bash. Seems to me that this early 86SE (oil filler at front) needs a tune-up and/or the later ignition as the journo reports bogging down in traffic ..and ...

Re: Restauration result of a Lotus Excel SE

Great result CID. 8) I too use a dashboard AFR meter (in the Clan which also runs twin DHLAs). An AFR meter is a great educational tool. You have individual air filters rather than the plenum air box which means some setting changes away from std for fueling and ignition are likely required. Many ov...

Re: Harrys garage

I'm sure most of you on here will have had a look at Harry and his great car collection via Youtube. Well his latest episode where he talks about his Jaguar project 7 will be of interest, not least of all because of an amazing looking Elite that appears during a show . Well worth a look Saw that to...

Re: Just found 2 studs with nuts on top of the steering rack

Engine out is best.

...otherwise raising the the engine on the n/s after undoing the engine mount (leg to chassis bolt) on the n/s should give access in situ.

Re: Significant Club donation

Great News! :D

It's for a worthy cause - especially in support of the Elite as Lotus' first proper GT.

I like my current Excel SE, but I still love (pine for) my black '76 Elite 501 (deceased). :(

Re: Door beam factory colour?

Interested to know the answer too! How would they do the painting according to Peter's reply? One of the hinge mounts would need to come off to get the hinge pin in and the beam on, or are all the bits painted separately and then put together afterwards? Can't rely on mine as it been painted a lot....

Re: Door beam factory colour?

I’m getting close to painting my SE and this will include the rebuilt door beams. What colour would the section of beam between door shell and hinge that can be seen when you open door have been when it left the factory? Body colour or mat black? Mine, looking down into the hinge area with door ope...

Re: Re built engine check over

I feel your concern. If it has not run since rebuild then it's an unproven engine which is almost as stressful as a broken one, until it's ran! :( I've built a few engines in my time and I'm always concerned about something I might have not done so well and wouldn't be happy until it had run fault f...

Re: split rims

I think you have hit the nail on the head with supply, theres little choice of 14" tyres for the elite and eclat (or even early excels) going to 15 or 16" really opens up the door to some quality tyres but with a lower profile to keep the same rolling radius / line within the wheelarch. I know that...

Re: split rims

My experience with fitting larger rims has some regrets, performance-wise. I 've done this with the Clan - not the Excel  . Stating the obvious, my main gripes are increased unsprung weight, and engine torque-sapping. There are cummulative hits if you also increase the width -even more so on a...

Re: New member - Excel SA

Just a thought. Considering the fan run-on feature after the ignition is switched off, if there's no effective coolant circulation then the fans will stay-on as long as the otter switch is within hot water. The coolant temp in the block will be unaffected by the fan run-on too without coolant circul...

Re: Re-Profiled Cams

Shawn, Definitely mapped ignition will help ... ...but .... for the L14 cam look at Esprit2's chart figure for inlet closing after bottom dead centre (ABDC) ...it's 67 degs rather than 60 degs ABDC for the 104 cam on the SE inlets. Lotus matched the static compression ratio (SCR) for the 104 cam wit...

Just bear in mind that within the £7000 - £9000 estimate, an additional 7.5% fees, plus admin, +VAT adds pain for both buyer and seller.
