Re: 1992 Excel - what value?

i would not accept less than 5500gbp, if the dyno test showed that the engine produced the lotus claimed 180 bhp and 160 ft lb on the dyno be sure to mention it as very few do or did even when new. fixing the paint would not be cost effective (respray 3000 to 6000) but fixing the electrical faults a...

Re: Engine Rebuild - Plan of Action

Richard, i saw on another thread that you were getting lots of advice about second guessing the cause of the wear in the nicasil coating on the liner, if it was caused by coolant you would likely have had a noticeable loss and possibly emulsion in the oil. not to mention white "smoke" from the exhau...

Re: Engine Rebuild - Plan of Action

Richard, whichever liners you choose is not going to bother me, either will give long service in a standard engine provided nicasil liners are made to at least oe standard. good luck with your build just try to maintain clean room standards during it.

Re: Engine Rebuild - Plan of Action

lotus e clan my engine is a detuned version of Mike's competition engines, i do not have to know about engine design Mike does it for me and it was he who advised me not to use nicasil liners in the engine. the problem with nicasil is that when it fails, generally at 80k miles the lip formed at the ...

Re: Engine Rebuild - Plan of Action

lotus e clan, gosh i do love it when amateurs tell me that my post is not true, i was repeating the advice that i was given when my engine was being upgraded to 2500 cc by Mike Taylor an ultimate professional when it comes to lotus 9 series engines. after all it was he who found the engine fault tha...

Re: Engine Rebuild - Plan of Action

aluminiumnicasil liners upside, marginally lighter than iron,
downside, failure of the lining can be catastrophic, as you know .
iron liners upside, more reliable and longer lasting than nicasil and cost less.
LB will not readily agree to fitting nicasil to 2.5 engines

Re: Running rich - stumbles on idle pull off

it would be rare for carbs to run so rich as to cause a smell of petrol, unburnt mixture is escaping from them.where are in relation to the car when you smell the petrol.

Re: Running rich - stumbles on idle pull off

carbs do not change their adjusting screws by themselves, so obviously an internal fault has occurred therefore you need to repair then reset. to do so manometer adaptors, manometers, (alternatively a piece of hose pipe can be used) and an exhaust gas analyser are needed. simple procedure, go find o...

Re: Slipped Cam Belt

90 deg twist is about the correct tension if tested on the run between exhaust cam wheel and crank sprocket, so what caused it to jump?, could be incorrect or sub standard cam belt or worn teeth on the belt or any or all of the four sprockets. if you cannot determine if there is wear on these i thin...

Re: Is The Excel The Cheapest Classic To Own?

winning or loosing, if that is the purpose of this thread is of no interest to me, i have a reliable car which does not suffer from electrical or other gremlins and is very much more exciting to drive than when it was a standard car. so far as i'm concerned that's a victory. and there is even a bonu...

Re: Is The Excel The Cheapest Classic To Own?

the excel was never intended to be a cheap car to own or run. i have every invoice from pre-delivery check to date. excluding all consumables and mot fees but including purchase price the total is ,to the nearest £K, 52000. however it is worth noting two things, the car had been maintained as standa...
