Re: Part Wiring loom

Hi Zac This happen to me. This is what I ended up having to do. Take out the instrument panel and the whole dash, this exposes the wire loom. Unwrap the tape around the wire loom, separate out the damaged wires then start replacing the damage ones from a 1987+ model excel. The 1987+ uses thicker wir...

Re: Interior rear view mirror (Complete)

My plastic base was broken a few places. the knob would not stay put and the mirror would fall from the roof. Without a mirror the car is not road registrable here in Australia. So it would be off the road just because of a mirror. I fixed it by buying a block of aluminium the same size as the origi...

Re: FYI: please read, regarding main wire loom

Hi Jim Sorry for the vague location description. The top left screw holding the black metal plate containing all the gauges. This is the screw that screwed into my wire loom. I did check the screw that holds the wooden veneer cover, it did not appear to reach the wire loom with a 1 inch 6g screw, it...

FYI: please read, regarding main wire loom

HI All I was unsure how to bring this to everyones attention. Long ago my wire loom was burnt out, the real cause was never found. This problem may be unique to my 1986 SE manual. But it may not. I had my instrument panel out and was screwing it back in. I fitted new stainless screw mounts , they ar...

Re: Fog Light alternatives

The correct part number Hella foglights come up for sale reasonably regularly on the ebay.de site. I bought a NOS (new old stock) fog light aftermarket kit for some 1980s car . The kit contains the exact fog lights we use, it has some mounting parts, wiring, a rely and switch. All I can suggest is y...

Re: indicators and full beam

What is your year model?
There are many things you could have disturbed.

If you removed the whole dash back to the firewall.
Check the connectors going forward on the passenger side, my connectors were corroded, not much at the front of the car worked for me until I removed them.

Re: Anyone fancy a project ?

The number plate says its from "beautiful british columbia". In Canada It is being driven on a near Stinson beech in California. It was built in Norfolk in England. According to the add, modified in New Zealand. It now looks and sound like "Skip" from the "Night Rider" TV show. Whoever said the lotu...

Re: Burnt wiring spur

There are 2 wire looms going forward in my 1986 excel. Yours should be very similar to my 1986 as it uses most of the same loom and connectors that the 1984 used. A bunch of cables, I guess it could be referred to as a loom goes through the fire wall behind the drivers pedals and the other is on the...

Re: Alternator appears not to immediately start charging

I had the same problem, intermittent charging of the battery. Everything was tested and many things were replaced. I eventually found it. The 20 pin instrument panel connector had a small amount of oxide on its connectors. It did not really show up as intermittent instrument readings but did cause t...

Re: Tailored seat covers

Unfortunately the Excel seats are unique. I like seat covers, they give protection the original seat material. I was driving about and found a small shop that sold sheep skin, outside Orange (Australia). They took the measurements and 3 week later I had the deepest pile car seat covers I have ever s...

Re: Door seals

I have both new and old door seals on my Excel. Unfortunately none fit around the whole door frame, they always leave a gap and do not seal against the fibreglass door jamb properly. This is so normal that silicone was used under them to keep the water out with poor results. I poured water around th...

Re: Carpet quantity

Roadrunner The rear parcel shelf carpet is not difficult to replace. The top layer is the carpet, the bottom layer is the soundproofing underlay. As usual the carpet is glued to the underlay. Once you have the carpet free from the underlay, it easily slides out of the window/rear shelf gap. The gap ...

Re: Issues with dash instrument dials

I failed to mention. If you already get condensation on the glass , you already have water in the instrument. Covering it will do nothing to remove the moisture , except allow all the oxygen in the H2O (water) already in the instrument to find a stronger bond and form corrosion, thus damaging it mor...

Re: Issues with dash instrument dials

I had this problem. To get the humidity out is a bit difficult and takes a few repeats of the process. The problem is caused by the heating of the air in the instrument bodies when they are being used. the warn air leaks out and when you are finished for the day the outside air carrying condensation...

Re: Carpet quantity

Hi I started replacing my carpet but one thing lead to another. This is what happens when I replaced the carpets I have just been replacing my carpets, the minimum you will need is 1.5m wide by 3.1m long. You should make a full template set of the existing carpet pieces you have. For me, the passeng...
