Re: Paintwork on my Elite roof
My experience is limited to having my Excel's front bumper resprayed. I took it off reinforced an area of spider web cracking on the back, sanded back through the cracked gel coat, replaced the gel with resin filler bought from Halfords and after using some elbow grease achieved a surprisingly good...

Re: Paintwork on my Elite roof
. Personally I think it would suit a vinyl top. Definitely 8) Do you have experiences with this as well? No I don't but I've found a place to buy a roof kit and I'll find a shop that applies vinyl and talk to them. My concerns, as before, are finding a trim strip to sit inside the rear lip of the r...

Re: Paintwork on my Elite roof
Hi Richard ,I have to agree with the paint shop ,you need to start again from the gell coat. This needs a seal coat, primer coats, base coat colour and then lacquer. The primer will need to cure and be blocked to give a flat, riple free surface . Unfortunately fiberglass substrates demand more time ...

Re: Paintwork on my Elite roof
I had a 'gulp' moment today. I received the estimate for repainting the roof from a shop that previously did work on my daughter's car very reasonably, and who were also recommended by Smith & Deakin. Suffice to say it was four figures, which rules it out for the time being at least. Unfortunately I...

Re: Excel Convertable
Saw this for sale recently at a lower price, but it was unrestored. It should definitely have been made, but I'm not sure about the side treatment - very much of its time but it dated very quickly. However the cost and price projections (very detailed) would have made it very competitive.

Re: A few niggles... Fan switch and warning light
If the fan fails, an easy check is the fuse box. On my car, the fuse was OK but it wasn't making contact with the sprung holders under load. However the fan fail light did work.

Paintwork on my Elite roof
I've posted in various topics about the problems I have with blistering along the lip at the rear of my roof. I took the car to Smith & Deakins, a fibreglass specialist in Worcester, who concluded that the original paintwork had been applied too thickly and/or the undercoat along that recess had not...

...or you could try Lotusbits for a used one. I believe they are the same as fitted to the Elite and Eclat (s2 anyway).

Re: Restoration begins!
Thanks Richard - I had the fuel-injected V8 mapped there, but I didn't think of them for carb setup  . What are your seats looking like? I'll have to come over and have a look. Bash had his monster downdraught tuned somewhere near Doncaster - he said they made a really good job of it. I...

Re: Restoration begins!
Lighter flywheel as well as the later cam wheels/timing belt now on the shopping list! I had a look on Gary Kemp's website, but it appears to be "under construction". Nothing on their fleabay site at the moment either as they are on holiday! Shaun - was it hard to find someone with a rolling road w...

Re: Best Cam belt for HC
A few years ago, I asked Lotus about the "long life" belts developed for the US market. Their response was that they still advise sticking to the 24k miles/24 months C service interval. Don't ask me why, they didn't tell me. I'm just including it here for information. It's probably because they hav...

Re: Automatic cambelt tensioner and blue belt?
Thanks guys - I believe the blue belts are much less prone to stretching and are more durable than the standard ones and as a consequence aren't meant to need retensioning. In saying this I've probably answered my own question - stick with the manual tensioner!

Re: Restoration begins!
Thanks again guys. My current plan is to get all the old paint off with soda blasting and to repair all the gel cracks etc.. over the winter and then do exactly what Peter suggests and do the spaying on the driest days next spring/summer. Richard - are you suggesting a second gel coat application o...
