There is nothing inherently wrong with a +15 thou block. It does sound like something has broken off and contaminated the oil badly. Impossible to tell the extent of the damage until you've dismantled the engine. Let us know what you find before replacing the whole lot - it may not be as terminal as ...

I can't imagine that the S2 would be different to the earlier cars in this regard - captive.
