If you spot one, shame them into owning up!!

Pretty cool setup. Debating making the open recess a brake light 'booster' myself. Did you use any special type of socket for that location?

FWIW, I did add the brake light booster to the open socket. The LED bulb I used has no spread though and just makes a dot on the lens, but is distinguishable when illuminated.
I have now also added a relay and tied the Fog Lights to the Brake light circuit. The fog lights still work as usual, but also light up when the brake is applied. This was my solution to adding a center high 3rd brake light - much simpler and I don't have to mess with the new paint job!!!
Curiously, running with the Fog lights on, they get even brighter with the brake applied - presumably the relay wiring coming straight off the battery has greater oompf and brightens the bulbs a tad more!!!
Lastly, since US cars don't even have Fog lights, the modification won't be 'illegal' when I ship it back in May, if anyone had concerns.

Perhaps,
I was writing it off to smaller gauge wire in the original harness than what I installed on the relay side of things and the proximity of the relay to the battery has less voltage drop then the fog light switch which has to make the round trip to the console - again on lighter gauge wire. It's probably a combination of both that and the earth as you said.

Here is a quick video of what the rear lights look like modified. Turn on the Closed Captioning CC button for descriptive text, but it's pretty obvious what you're seeing IMO.
You can see the lag between the relay circuit combined with the incandescent bulbs in the fog housings versus the LEDs in the original brake light. I think the lag might actually make a more punctuated difference in someone noticing them coming on, but perhaps I'm just a cock-eyed optimist!!

Annual Visit to MOT station successful albeit with expected advisories.
A little ball joint action required and there is nothing wrong with my number plate, officer
