Right hand capping and the dummy fuel cap

There was a certain amount of discussion over the weekend about whether the dummy filler cap as fitted to Darren’s car was original or aftermarket as most seem to have a sticker in the recess as the slightly earlier car in the Club Lotus stand.
This all only relates to 83 and 84MY cars.

So I’ve done a little research and found the following.

Both engineering prototype cars have the dummy filler cap fitted.

Also it does appear in the parts catalogue, together with the badge that fits in the center of the dummy cap.
The decal in the parts catalogue is described as “used if no dummy filler cap fitted”.

The part numbers for interest are

Dummy filler cap A089B2423K prior 85MY

Badge dummy filler cap centre B074G6004F 83 and 84 MY

The roundel decal has three part numbers depending if white, black or gold.

This is interesting to me as my car is registered in January 83. Ive been wondering whether the dummy filler cap is original.
As you can see from the picture the recess is painted matt black, and most of the filler cap is also black (grey now) plastic with no paint on.

What do other people's dummy caps look like?

This is what the factory dummy cap looks like. It has a Lotus badge in the centre with a screw beneath.

Not all cars with a recess had a dummy cap. They could also have a Lotus sticker instead.
