Excel SA on FB Marketplace.- Caution

Post by Hawaiis0 »

Hi All

Just seen a Excel SA on FB for 30K.

Lots of concerns pop up, so beware. Fortunately it is priced out of range so will not pose an issue to most.

It is a B Reg first registered 1985. Note the SA was introduced as a MY87 car late 1986, so is 2 years early. It's not a de lorean so I dont think it's hit 86mph!

It has late wheels, spoiler and door mirrors so would indicate a post MY90 model. These are all transferable items so not impossible to transplant.

Cloned?

That is a strange one.
Last change if owner early this year.
Change of colour from black to grey in 2010
Registration number comes back as an early 1985 Eclat Excel. So as you say, everything about that car is wrong for 1985, except the reg number!!! All says post 90MY even the door cards have the pocket.

They’re now trying to auction it off. Less than 2 days left on auction and only £700 - I’m guessing everyone has their barge pole out !!!

As commented earlier in thread, this car is just ALL wrong.
It says it's a Cat C insurance job, but I don't see how even this explains it.

Reg plate and VIN plate are consistent with each other and I can see from the register that the Chassis and Engine No's fit nicely in with a late B, very early C registered car.
But EVERY photo I look at shouts a late SE car : Citroen mirrors, boot brace support, Dash, HC cam covers, door cards and not least it's an SA !!!
This car was supposed to be registered on 1st May 85, but the SA wasn't released until Oct 86 - Not even close.
I don't know what that engine number is, but I'd put money on it not being the one listed on the VIN plate.

BTW, it's reached a heady £1000 now.
What goes together.... Must come apart.

Up to £2,000 now and still on Facebook for £24,000 so I guess it's a long way from the reserve.
What car is that?

Anyone near Kingston-upon-Thames prepared to call the sellers bluff and go and take a look in person? Auction ends this evening so they'll have to be quick!

The most logical explanation is that the VIN and number plate belonged to a genuine 1985 Excel that was a CAT C write-off in 1999. Its identity has then been screwed onto a totally different later car, most likely to disguise a stolen car and pass it off as legitimate.

Given that the write-off occurred 25 years ago, it is entirely possible that this act of forgery also happened many years ago. It may be possible that this car has changed hands since, maybe several times, so the current seller might not even be aware (or have been aware when they bought it) that its past has been forged. Or maybe it is more recent, and the seller themselves is a wrong 'un.

Still, the wildly optimistic price (even if the car was authentic) suggests that they are dreaming of selling to someone who has no idea what they are buying, or what its true market value is.

Wow!! Considering all the red flags and dodgy history, that’s quite some price!
But, if he wants close to his £24k, I think it will be for sale for quite some time!!
