Fuel pump crush washer

Hi Folks. Getting ready to install a new fuel pump to a 90 Excel SE. I have noticed that there is a crush washer on the output feed, before the reducing bush, and I am assuming I need to replace that with the new pump(?) I cannot see the part on SJ so am wondering where I can get one, or is it safe to re-use what I have? Naturally all thread joints will also be PTFE'd.

Thanks,

Duncs

It's a while since I dismantled the fuel pump - do you mean the olive and the gland nut? I don't remember any crush washers - do you have a photo? I don't remember any pipe threads to seal either, so no need for PTFE tape - risk of bits breaking off and disabling the needle valves in the carbs.

The fuel pump assembly is laid out the same way as in page 44.03 of the service manual. There is a crush washer (item 30) that sites between the reducing bush and the pump at the pump's outlet that goes on to the filter and on to the non-return valve and carbs. I don't have a photo of the assembly, but it is the same as in 44.03 below:

You'll almost certainly be able to use the copper washer (30) again - if not you'll be able to buy new from Think Automotive, or maybe a local plumber's merchant, or fleabay. I'll see if I can find my old pump to look at the size - I may have one in the drawer you can have.

Hi Duncs - found my old pump! Last seen around 16 years ago!! I was wrong about the PTFE tape - the reducing bush is wrapped in it. I'd forgotten what a grim setup it is to get the fitting pointing in the correct direction - I hate to see these sort of things on fuel lines. I've also got a couple of folded copper washers - if you pm me your address (and surname) I'll stick them in the post :D

That is extremely kind of you. I can see my "people I owe a pint to" list growing for when the car is able to make it to an event! Will PM now :D

Are PMs working OK?

PM's are working, sort of, sometimes you have to "send it" twice - just check it goes into the "outbox".

I wouldn't use PTFE in this application. When I fitted a replacement pump to my Excel I considered using PTFE on the joints but first tried dropping a piece of tape into a cup of petrol. I found petrol dissolved the PTFE

My bet is that this is a standard copper washer rather than a crush washer. If so, and it is not badly damaged, you can re-anneal it for further use. Heat it to cherry red with a blowtorch and then quench in cold water. This restores it's original properties and it will act like new.
