Help! Diff refill plug removal

Post by StevoXL »

Hi, trying to remove the diff plus and it's proving tricker than I'd hoped!

I've tried a 24mm and 15/16 socket with a universal joint and short extension around the back of the suspension arms, shallow 15/16 swan neck ring spanner, socket on a 600mm bar. Nothing is getting is working well enough to get a decent grip and undo the nut.

What works best for anyone else?

Get the spanner on tight then get a 6ft scaffold pipe and extend the torque arm. Force + Distance _ Torque ( or something magical)

Try bi hex socket ground down

Mine went off like a canon blast when it broke free. Getting it airborne so you can get a better swing helps.

Remember to clean the top hat breather. It should wobble on its post.

Thanks Stu, what type of spanner did you use? Swan neck?

The nut head is very shallow that doesnt help but like Stu I use a 6 sided socket thats been ground down so it just goes over the nut and then a breaker bar. You will only need to do this once if you use copperslip on the threads when you put it back. I did have to use my induction heater on one though it was so tight (intermetallic corrosion). The one on my car has a nut welded to the filler plug to give a better purchase but you can only do that once its out.

Many thanks Bash & Stu,

All done now with a shallow 24mm socket and breaker bar. Nut is a bit rounded, which wasn't helping, but at least I managed to get some oil in.

All the best
Steve

Did you check the breather is clean and loose to touch?
