Battery swap

Belts, Plugs, Filters, Fuels, Oils, additives etc..... Told you this might morph into servicing and service items.

Battery swap

Post by Mutley »

An old family runaround Mazda is destined for the scrapyard after filling a sheet of MOT failure points, but it has a nearly new battery rated 60 Amperes per hour with 450 Cold Cranking.

My Excel battery is rated 55 & 510 and is knackered. What do these figures mean, is one figure the amount of 'oomph' & the second how long it can deliver it for? Most importantly could I swap the batteries as they're virtually the same size?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Yep .. the lower number is the Amp Hour capacity .. in theory at least, the 60ah could supply 1 amp of current for 60 hours, or 10 amps for 6 hours before dropping below a certain voltage.

The cold cranking amps is an indication of how much power the battery can deliver into a low resistance load for a short period - such as a started motor!

You'd probably be ok with the 450 CC .. especially as the weather gets warmer. The only time it may struggle is on freezing cold days at which times batteries struggle to put out as much power.
