Changing a CAM belt

Belts, Plugs, Filters, Fuels, Oils, additives etc..... Told you this might morph into servicing and service items.

Changing a CAM belt

Post by dpr59 »

Second post on this thread has a different approach.

Bit of lateral thinking.
However as further suggested, marking all the positions is always a good back stop.

He'll be lucky to find a Burroughs gauge. He could use a Krikit instead......

Well, if I was right all the time I'd get to be predictable!

Not exactly a new "trick" - it's been mentioned on here a few times.

Must have missed that one or few.....

Just ordered a new belt and tensioner from SJ. Hence current interest.

Dave, is yours the eccentric tensioner or the automatic jobby? I can loan you my Optikrik tension gauge if needed. Cheers, Chris

am i the only one thats perplexed on how some one proposes to cut the belt without dammaging the cam wheels or turning the engine over?... not to mention the fact that theres no way your going to cut down by the timing advance marks/crank pully...

mabe im just a cynic... but whats wrong with dooing somthing as potentially terminal (if you get it wrong), properly...

Thanks Chris, I've all the bits I need except time.
I want it done before Silverstone and the weekends are pretty busy up to then. Think this'll be a take to garage, go to work and collect a couple of days later job.

I have never cut the belt. I set the pulleys to the marks, remove the V-belt pulley, release the tensioner and swap belts. I think it's also quicker to do it this way. The only points needing special attention are making sure the distributor pulley is correctly positioned and checking the eccentric tensioner is tightened against the belt in the right direction.

It's the eccentric tensioner Chris.

And I arrived home tonight in the Fiat with half a garden centre in the boot. So I know what I'm doing this weekend.
The Lotus is being done on Monday, hope it costs less than the plants Sue bought....
