When replacing your fuel pump on the post-87 configuration, be very careful.
The brass elbows are soft and easily squashed during removal for transfer to the new pump. This results in it being impossible get a fuel-tight seal when the hoses are refitted to them.

Oh - and the correct order is :
removal : output off first, then input - but you may have to rotate the input side so the flatted area is correctly aligned for the output to rotate.
installation : input first, then output - but see note above above the flatted area.

Re: Post -87 fuel pump
However - it may be the placebo effect, but the car feels a lot better with the new pump. Seems to have regained a few missing horses and throttle response seems better.
It just sounds wrong - the old familiar "tick tick tick" has been replaced by rumbling when the pump starts up.

Now need to replace my pump. Got the elbows out of the old pump, but they don't line up when installed in the new one - the outlet is way off where it should be. Any ideas please?!

Re: Post -87 fuel pump
May need a new crush washer (or some sort of unofficial spacer to get a seal) or just a bit more elbow grease for the last half-turn. Did you leave the O rings in place on the new pump ?(i did and it seems to work ok).Gavin Hamson wrote:

OTOH - that's the one that I didn't manage to crush. I could pop it in the post if you're really stuck in case it's a better fit.

Re: Post -87 fuel pump
I had the same issue and clearly the old crush washer was, well crushed so unusable. However I found that the flex pipe could easily be redirected to the new end position and that solved the problem and straight way everything worked.
However, in the pride before a fall principle, the car won't start now! I can here the fuel pump ticking but it sounds as if fuel is not getting to the carbs, which is odd since it worked initially. I'm guessing there may be an air block somewhere so over the weekend I'll see of I can bleed the system. Just I pity I hadn't seen the notes on which pipe to unattached and re-attach first!

Re: Post -87 fuel pump
When I installed mine, it took a while to start because of air in the system. WOT during cranking seemed to help it blow/suck the air through and get the pump primed.

Sorry Angus what does WOT stand for? Wide open throttle (war on terror seems wide of the mark!)

Yup - wide open. Lets the engine vacuum suck the fuel through while the pump tries to push it through as well.Gracie wrote:Sorry Angus what does WOT stand for? Wide open throttle (war on terror seems wide of the mark!)

Re: Post -87 fuel pump
Thank you Angus - a bit more elbow grease did the trick.
