Just popped into Halfords today and noticed they are now selling an own-brand 5W/50 fully synthetic oil. This is the same grade as the old Mobil 1 Rally Formula which Lotus originally recommended for the excel, so is another alternative
Its marketed as an oil for track-days, (though probably as an upgrade for cars normally using 10W/40 weight oil), but may be a good choce for Excel road-use. For Excel Track use I don`t think you can beat Castrol RS 10w/60

I did hear some time ago that the Halfords fully synthetic oil cans were filled with Esso fully synthetic oil ... but this is a few years ago and may no longer be the case.
My Excel had one oil change with Halfords 5w/40 fully synthetic when I was in a rush and Mobil 1/Castrol RS were sold out. At those times I was doing 3000 miles a month so it was only in there for 2 months - seemed ok..
