Suspensions Alternatives

Post by The Kingmaker »

Hi

I wonder if anyone can point me in the direction of alternative front springs and shocks on my excel (88) please?

I am just checking out what options I have open to me, as I have to get the old girl through an MOT.

Any advice gratefully received.

Keep original springs on the front and replace the shocks with your preferred after markets. AVO ; protechs or Gaz to name a few options

Thanks for the tip.

Would I just buy shocks for the car from any supplier?

Is there a specific other car with the same shocks that I would ask for instead, or do I just ask for lotus excel shocks?

How quickly do you need them ? There's a 2-4 week lag from most suppliers as they tend to build to order.

Given Lotus' reputation for suspension, I think you can pretty much guarantee that the springs & dampers are unique to them.

I see. In that case I will just go via Lotus Bits.

I wasn't sure if they were available in stores from a different car.

Lotusbits for Avo
SJ Sports Cars for Protech
Dampertech for Gaz (cheaper than eBay)

LotusBits or SJ for springs.

Does anyone advise against the AVO adjustable Coilovers? I have the spring/damper combination for all 4 corners but have not yet installed them. Should I reconsider installing the springs up front?
My Excel kinda lurches up it's rear end under braking to a halt and I suspect the rears are pretty far gone based on that, so will change those out completely - all in good time.

The rears you will have to swap to coil over type due to the coil carrier being on the shock. The fronts you can keep to the original springs as the carrier is on the arm.

I would try just swapping the front shock first
