A 12V Power Supply

For all those wiring gremlins we love, this is the place to discuss them.

A 12V Power Supply

Post by RED BARON »

I am looking for a continuous power supply of 12V at 10A that gives me this even with the engine running or turned off and without the
ignition turned on or off.

I can't use the Phone auxiliary plug as it is taken up by a very sophisticated alarm system that has a control panel in the glove box with a pin number in case you loose the keys, and sensors under the bonnet and in the boot, air pressure sensors inside and automatic door locking and arming as soon as you take the key out and open the doors and close them.

This is why I want a independent 12V source, from some where else that is easy to get to and obtain.

Thanks.
Ian.

Just under the dash is the main battery feed to instruments. It is mounted on an insulated stud through an earthed frame so be careful if you use it. It is direct to the battery with no fuse protection. Do not short it or you are knee deep in shugar. The insulated stud can be fragile.

Where in the car do you want the permanent 12V supply? This decides whether the boot(battery), engine bay (starter motor main electrical cable) or behind dash (see previous post), all to reduce the risk of fire from a live contact to body/earth, even with fuses. Also bear in mind inadvertent battery flattening if left on as slight current leaks may not easily be noticed.
Fire means an EX-Excel!

I want this 12v 10A supply UNDER THE BONNET so I can put a variable thermostatic temperature radiator fan switch to turn the fans on as a over ride to the otter switch. It will have a 10A in line fuse to a relay with another fuse in the relay.

I want to put this switch in TO KEEP THE FANS RUNNING because if I go out for even a shortish drive, when I get back the car engine and radiator will be at normal temperature about 90 degrees.

I turn the engine off the fans stop take the ignition key out for security get out close the door the alarm sets the imobiliser comes on automatically.

This I have to do to remove 2 cars off the driveway so I can put the Lotus away in the garage for safe keeping.

I have found in the warm weather and the engine not running there is no water circulation so by the time I get back in the radiator temperature has climbed quite high. So when I start it back up to put it away it is now getting close to boiling point, and more important the oil pressure has dropped quite low.

This is why.

You already have a convenient 12V feed under the bonnet - main cable to the starter.

Moving a little forward - next unit is the alternator feed.

Will the alarm system be affected by the fans continuing to run, or does it not detect electrical activity? Would you need to power an electric water pump as well for the radiator cooling to be effective?
