Remove wiper motor

Guys, thanks in advance - I need a blow by blow article on how to remove the wiper motor Excel 1986 - I cannot see this in the technical section, anyone point me in the right direction please?

Hi Russell,

Until/unless someone can find a more detailed article, the basic process is that you need to remove the speedo/tacho instrument panel. Unscrew the wooden or black trim panel, then the metal panel underneath that holds the instruments. You may get away with just pulling the metal panel with instruments out of the way a bit, but it might be easier to disconnect them and remove them completely. The wiper motor is behind there. It is damned fiddly, but you can get to it.

I'm pretty sure I've seen it documented somewhere - recall something about attaching a piece of string/wire to the spindle to help pull it back through when getting it all back together.

It's not so hard when you have the whole car apart!

Basically as said.
Not essential, but makes job easier - remove steering wheel.
Remove wooden instrument panel if SE or black panel if not - just 4 screws.
Remove instruments, again 4 screws - better to disconnect electrical connector.
You will then see wiper motor.
Remove wiper arm and nuts retaining spindle in scuttle. Tie wire/fishing line around spindle.
Draw motor, drive and spindle through dash. Leave wire to allow pulling back into place when replacing.

When i repaired my motor, i left the spindle alone and just pulled the actuator rod out of the tube to the spindle. I think i undid the nut that holds the tube to the motor and pulled the motor complete with rod ( covered in grease) out.

Hi Peter,

I have been through all the site logs going years back and there is no record of any posts relating to this topic having been removed. The way that the forum software works is that any post deletion (even by the author a minute after posting something) is logged as an event - the content of the deleted post is not retained, only any reason for deletion that may have been recorded.

I also did a search for ‘wiper motor removal’ and didn’t find the message from the link that you posted, so can only imagine that it was a glitch, or perhaps there was an additional search term that meant that no records could be found.

I hope this clears things up.

So for example, phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3172&hilit=wi ... or+removal won't work, but
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3172&hilit=wiper+motor+removal will.

Recon I might be in to this task shortly. Took car for a drive Friday. Needless to say it was raining!!! Turned wipers on - nothing. Eventually found that on fast speed, it would work, but on all other positions, it either did nothing, or at best was VERY slow and stopping mid cycle.
I did hear a chattering from the motor area at one point when in intermittent position. I was surprised there is no relays, so the fact even standard speed is a direct feed, I'm thinking brushes.
Thoughts anyone.

Yes, new brushes, cheap part, and basically give the motor & its mechanism a good overhaul.

For Tony, Metblue. as you have two cars which of your two wipers is faulting.
Another common fault is wear on the drive cable or gear cogs, but usually this results in the wiper is parked somewhere else to the normal parked position.
