For all those wiring gremlins we love, this is the place to discuss them.

Lucas distributor lower cover

Post by Zaphod »

The lower cover from my standard Lucas distributor is missing, It's in the garage somewhere but has gone walkabout. This is the part that sits under the rotor arm and its held in place by the distributor cap. I have a feeling its absence may be the cause of the horrid noise I am getting as it seems it can be the cause of some similar issues on V8 EFi rover engines and I know it's missing on mine however I don't seem to be able to find a replacement, this may be more a case of I don't know what its called and thus what to ask google to find more than any lack of available replacements! Can anyone help?
Of all the things I have lost I think I miss my mind the most...

Links not working Tanz, but searching on Distributor on the SJ site comes up with a flash shield, which I think is the part being discussed here.

Mines missing also ( started to break up so I left out). Doesn't seem to affect the running of my car.

That is it. My car has the most frightful noise when any RPM is applied, like a dry ballrace.. and it seems a similar problem can occur on the EFI V9 rover engines when this part is missing as it seems on some distributors the centre carbon brush can be too long and this when it missing causes a horrid noise, the symptoms sound very like what I have. Again there seem some that are fine without it!
