Cooling fans don't kick in, fuses, relays, otters all ok
Hi folks,
I have a problem with the radiator fans. They don't kick in. Fuses are all ok. Relays too. When we shortcut the otterswitch the lamp with the fan faliure flashes on. This lamp also comes when we short cut the coolant reservoir. So we think the low level coolant modul work either.
Do you have any further ideas? I couldn' t find any similar problem yet.
Thanks in advance
Don

do the motors on the fans work if you connect them directly a battery? although it seems strange both would go, however the fan fail light should stay on, as with it doubling up as a low coolant, so perhaps the issue lies there?

Oh yes, an important detail. Thx.
Yes, the fans both do work properly when they are shortcutted too.

My low coolant warning does not work but the fans still work fine. The only time I have had the fan warning light come on is when one of the fans had jammed. The other still worked though. Are you sure the realy is fine. Posiibly try a different relay - from the lights? They are a differnet type and should make one of the fans come on permanently. This will at least give you an idea if the wiring is fine.

That really does sound like a fan relay problem to me.

Both fans are still running when short cutted.
I have changed the relays already... If this were the right ones I have changed

Hey Don,
had the same problem!
There is a small Diode in the footwell that was faulty.
See the wiring diagram there is one in the fan circuit, but it was hard to find the location.
Regards Harald.

I had the same problem with the fans not working and it wasn't one of the usual problems. The fans worked when directly connected and I checked all the relays, otter switch etc and everything worked OK. In the end the source of the problem turned out to be a hidden connector that is tucked under the body panel in front of the leading edge of the bonnet. It had burnt out and I had to chop it out and replace it.

Re: Cooling fans don't kick in, fuses, relays, otters all ok
Harald&Andrew: Important news. Thanks for it.
The fans are now running a bit late (>100°), but they run. But you can hear the relay clearly. The switching is very noisy and the waterdial seems to jump a bit for a few ° backwards, when the relay just has switched, although there is no coolingpower from the fans noticed. Seems to be the resistance? The relay is from Hella so no cheap item. Is the noisy operation normal?

Does anyone know something concerning the noisy relais and its behavior?

Is it noisy if you manually trigger the fan operation by connecting the otter leads together ?
(I'm wondering if it could be some "chatter" in the switch).

Re: Cooling fans don't kick in, fuses, relays, otters all ok
Can someone advise me if both cooling fans should come on, together, in all circumstances? I have one which was seized, now freed up, and works okay when directly connected to power, but does not come on with the other fan . Am now confused!
