Engine control by auto gearbox.

I'm having trouble with the engine stalling under load when trying to reverse up hill. Anyone understand automatics and their connection to engine control? There is also a intermittent stumble at low revs pulling away from junctions which might be connected.

It sounds like the same thing is happening going forward or backward! I suspect if you can sort one the other will also be sorted. I don't think there are any sophisticated electrics/electronics on the auto gearboxes of the period - I suspect it's more likely to be an engine problem :?: so fuel or ignition? Did you manage to investigate the timing?

The only adjustment on the gearbox side is via the kickdown cable. If this is set too 'tight' then gear engagement from N or P can be sharp and could cause the engine to stall. If it is slackened off this makes gear engagement softer (as well as reducing changeup speeds). As Pete says, otherwise it's an engine problem.

I'd be looking at the rev limiter with a suspicious eye, I think.

Curious update on this thread.

Having made no direct attempt to solve my low rev pull off stumble, it was gone at the weekend. First time in 5 years!

Two items have been interfered with recently.

1 - New exhaust - original spec. (SJs) . One of the old back boxes was completely ( well 90%) blocked. Now flowing as expected.

2 - Two broken connections at the coil. An un-crimped inline crimp and a broken spade which must have been just hanging on.

With this we have a better car. Kick down more responsive as well. Curious. :D

Brilliant! I know that's been bugging you for ages. Can't believe you've cured it accidentally

Good news Stu! As you know I have had the same problem ever since I replaced the ignition system some years ago with a powerspark in dizzy job. Have already replaced exhaust and tried every position of kick down cable. Following your experience I will now check coil connections etc. Thanks for the post.

Sorry for being late to the party - anything to do with the ignition electrics would have been my first port of call. Just had a similar experience on an old VW; dizzy was loose and rotor arm had melted! Quickish fix and then off to help another similarly afflicted car and in that case, the condenser was at fault.
