Fill plug size

Post by TrevorK »

One of my output shafts seals is leaking. Before I set about changing it, I thought it wise to check that the oil fill plug will come out as I've read that they can seize. After spending some time fiddling about, I still am not sure what size the plug is or, more accurately, what size spanner I need to use to remove it It's not that accessible so i found it hard to get a socket on it and be sure it was located properly but the largest metric socket I have is 22mm while I have a 15/16ths imperial. The 22mm seemed too small and the 15/16ths too big so I'm at a bit of a loss.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks.

15/16th is nearly 24mm ( 23.8) so hopefully it is actually 23mm.
Fairly sure I have a 23mm ring so I can check later.

You'll need a piece of scaffolding pole to help assist. They can be rock solid. Also look at the top hat breather to make sure it is clean and clear. It should 'wobble' when touched. If it's blocked it will over pressurise the case, hence the leak.

What a difficult position to get to!!! Especially with the car not jacked up.

Impossible to get a 23mm ring spanner on to test size, but offering up the open end, it still looked too small.
After a bit of faffing around, the only socket that seemed to at least fit and not spin was a 1/2" Whitworth.

BTW, the drain plug uses the same copper seal washer, so presume thread is the same size. The 23mm ring did fit this, but not very well. Might be my cheap spanner though.

i use a six sided socket from an old set and Ive ground down the depth of the gripping part to about 6mm deep. This gives me room to get a braker bar in to undo the nut. Once the nut is loosened it will come off with your fingers.

Thanks for trying, Tony.

What size socket did you grind down, Bash?

I think its 23. ( Some idiot ground the numbers off ). Its just the intermetallic corrosion that holds it on, make sure you copperslip it when you put it back.

Thanks, Bash. I'll take the advice about the Copaslip.

When you get it off.
I sell alloy sump plugs with Neodymium magnets embedded in them.
Easy to remove with 22mm spanner.
Re-usable.
