Broken 45 DHLA :(

Post by Zaphod »

Was slowly progressing on cleaning the carbs ready to put back on the car, and hopefully get it running on petrol this week...
stripped one carb down, cleaned it up, reassembled, all went fine..
got to the second one, this appeared to have a bit more corrosion.. anyway the result is that on one side the head of the air bleed screw has come off leaving the rest in the body of the carb. The other part that won't come out is the power jet, and the end of it is damaged
So can I get them out? if not any recomendations as to who can?

Suggest speaking to Eurocarb or Lotus bits.

Interested to know how you get on - I have a spare 45 tri-jet body that has a stuck air bleed screw with the top sheered off.

Have you enquired about spark erosion to remove the part? Never had anything done myself but it sounds fantastic!

I have the same problem - broken air bleed screw.
This happened some years ago, but since I don't need to adjust this screw (the carbs are balanced without needing to adjust this one) I've not bother to get it fixed.
I phoned Eurocard at the time and they said it would cost about £40 (a few years ago) to drill out the old screw and replace it. Can't remember if this was an additional cost to getting the carbs serviced, or a stand alone cost.
Since theses carbs are expensive, £40 seemed a reasonable price to get someone who knows what they are doing to fix it properly.

I spoke with them on Monday, this appears to be a common problem, and they did not think it would be an issue to sort it out.

I dropped the carbs off with Eurocarb yesterday.. seems to be a 3 - 4 week wait now. So far I have between 170 and 180 psi per cylinder, the ignition is working as is the fuel pump.. so hopefully I will soon have a running engine!

Its not far off now, the box and engine are back in with carbs fitted. Just have to get the vacuum pipes fitted and the fuel pump.. Question is will I need to apply for a mortgage to fill the petrol can?
