Fuel pump effect on start
Hi everyone, just a thought on a poor starting elite. The car has a facet type fuel pump replaced by the previous owner. Is it possible that poor pressure is affecting start up?

I would have thought not. Doesn't take a lot of pressure to fill the floats and tick over doesn't need much volume to be pumped
How olds the fuel, how full is the tank and are you dredging sludge into the filters which would certainly starve things.
I assume that fact you're talking fuel means you have healthy spare?.

Dellortos only need 2.5 psi to be fair.
But Some pumps are pushers and others are pullers. You need a pusher in the boot near the tank or a puller in the engine bay near the carbs.
I have a Facet gold top in the (rear) engine bay of my Clan which pulls fuel from the front tank. It's a puller not a pusher. But there are other Facet types, so not sure what you have?

Re: Fuel pump effect on start
As long as there is fuel in the carb - more-or-less to the right depth - a car should start and run (for a couple of seconds or so) with no fuel pump at all. If the car runs OK once started (particularly if driving up a long hill with lots of throttle) then the pump is certainly pumping enough volume.
Thinking about it.... it is conceivable that if the pump is incorrect and pumping at too high a pressure, the carbs could be over-filling, which would make the mixture too rich, and that could make starting difficult. This could be checked by turning the ignition on for a few seconds (without starting the car), letting the fuel pump do its thing, switching off, then taking the lids off the carbs and seeing how full they are.
