Well searched Richard. A very exact document putting the clock and chassis numbers to the Excel development, Many thanks.
It appears the document is dated 1991 and only 56(´91) and 16(´92) cars were built after then so probably no further history.

How do we interpret those details?

For example what is the second number run after the chassis change over number?

It does not identify number of SA's or Celebrations for example.

Do we know what the last chassis number was ?

I can offer this extraction: sorry doesnt paginate well

Chassis change No. No. in Range Excel Total built
1148 254 254
1402 251 505
1653 312 827
1975 244 1071
2219 113 1184
2332 125 1309
2457 276 1585
2733 248 1833
2981 ?

There were fifteen cars built in 1992 rather than sixteen. I do have details of all of them plus the rest of the 92MY cars that were built in '91, and almost have all of the Celebration cars. I was planning on posting up details when my research is completed.

Hi Stu,

There are two VIN number ranges for the Excel. Taking the first entry - Excel Introduction - VIN number 89 D 1148 is the first Domestic specification car, while 89 - 0233 is the first non-Domestic car. The use of the '-' is to denote that it could be one of several codes denoting the intended market - all of which are detailed in the Parts List. Thus, you need to add to your table the number of non-Domestic cars built. From introduction to the '84 model year, for example, there were 13 (=246-233) non-Domestic cars built, making a total of 267.

Cheers, Richard
