An Excel with an alternative solution for a 3rd brake light came up for sale on Pistonheads today (1990 red one for £10,500).

I too have not yet invested the time to learn how to post pictures, so if you want to see it, you'll have to go to PH. I think this one (which also has rear spoiler delete - on a a late car) looks terrible, although I suppose the car looks marginally better than if someone had just crashed into the back of it.

I used an export model Jaguar xjs high level brake light, which bolted to the boot lid under the rear window. Came in a full range of Jag colours and were for sale in large numbers at autojumbles a few years back, not expensive. I fitted it under the spoiler,
(early car), was only visible to following drivers. Jeff.

The mix of grey and tan leather in the interior is.... certainly not to my taste.

My plan is to embed one into the spoiler, something like this:

That's the way I'd like to it, but I don't want to start butchering a good spoiler, so it's on hold.

I'd like one on the Elite but don't want to make holes in the rear end. Will probably end up with a slim glass-mount version, but it's a loooong way down the list! :D

Its just a variation of fitting a mk3 mx5 third brake light. Fitting a third light makes a big difference so whichever way its done its worthwhile.

I think it would look better if it was hidden in the black part of the spoiler, just below your suggested location, so nobody would notice it, until you put the brakes on. For this to work well, it would be best to have one with square edges so it could be flush mounted.

I think all extra brake lights will require some "butchering" - some more methods more than others. My car has already suffered much butchering in the past!

I'll have a look at the area in black (which had been previously painted white on my car), but think it slopes a fair bit. My car has red leather, red decals and will probably have a red pin stripe down the side, so I'm not too fussed about the red light in the spoiler. This light can also be wired to come on with the car lights but at a lower intensity.

Here is what I am using. When I figure out how to post pictures I will. It is hidden just under the white lip in the black area. It works perfectly, and all you have to do is drill 3 holes - 2 for the 2 screws, and one to pass the wires through the inside of the spoiler.
