Cause of overheating

Post by hodders »

Went for an early-morning drive over the Cotswolds today, hardly a car around. On the way back not so good, stuck behind a van churning up dead leaves behind it. Coming through Chipping Norton I suddenly noticed the temperature was 100 and rising, from its normal 80. I reckoned I'd make it home and carried on, then a few miles later I suddenly guessed what the problem was. External grille in the front air way totally full of leaves. Should have taken a picture.

Yes - I'm really glad I didn't post a picture - I had more leaves but it wasn't quite as good a photo...

I had almost exactly the same once, temp started to climb with no reason. I stopped to check and found a (sadly empty!) oblong pasty wrapper that covered 80% of the intake stuck to the grille - easily fixed!

I seem to rember when Steve Cropley ran an Excel as a car for Autocar back in the 90's and he reported exactly the same thing in his editorial page. Maybe someone has a copy?

On another point, what is the car the photo was taken from Angus?

The DB5 that the Classics Monthly team were in during the Beaujolais run last year.

At one point it may have seemed that Inspector Morse was chasing a pair of forensic scientists in pursuit of James Bond
