Cool cars we used to own

Post by bash »

Seeing as most of us have time on our hands Im sure we have all had former cars that were cool so how about a picture thread. I'll start it off with a Winterbottom....... Ive had numerous TVRs prior to the Lotus, but this is the purest one of his creations and are now quite rare, the Mk1 Tasmin hardtop.

I don't have photos (sorry - I know this is a picture thread!!) but I owned two cars at the same time in the early 80s that I thought were cool: A VW camper with pop-up roof and a Fiat X1/9 Lido. Passion wagon   8)

My first car for me a 1973 Bond Bug 700 ES :-) the ES meant it had an ashtray and hydraulic rod to lift the lid. Park anywhere, smiles everywhere but not one to drive is any sort of side wind

Heres another that I used to own, 390se, 275 bhp, 0 to 60 in 4.7 sec, 0 to 100 11.4 sec ( timed ). On the big TVR only trackday in this photo at Donington on the acceleration test it was over a second faster than any other TVR including a couple of tuscans. Back in the late 80s it was worth more than the flat we were living in so it went when we moved house but I wish I could have kept it. Never seen or heard of it since I sold it and not on DVLA web base so I dont know what happened to it. I suspect it was exported as it had every extra like aircon, wiltons, doeskin, LSD etc etc.

Thanks Pete. The the fronts are 5.5J /13 with 175/55 Avons - the rears are (rare) deep-dished (-25 offset) 8J /13 shod with 205/50 semi-slick Avons (NB narrower wheels and tyres are shown on the rear view photos). The extra lateral grip on the rear is necessary given the Porsche-like rear-engined handling characteristics - you have to keep your foot-in during fast cornering - lift at your peril!

Always been a fan of S1 Esprit Slot Wolfies too....journo's of the day said they looked too 'kit car'/downmarket for the Esprit ... current S1 values suggest they were just bitching!

Slight deviation here. I believe this was my Dads car, one I never got to see, as a brisk down hill pursuit and a popped bonnet half way down ended in a flattened screen, sore head and not enough pennies to repair the body. With a new wife and a baby on the way the car was traded in a direct swap for a newish family orientated Ford Zepher in 1963.

Wonder where it is now?

I'll try and get an original photo after the lock down ends

The only interesting car that I've owned that wasn't a Lotus was 998cc Mini Cooper. Fun to drive but the long centre-branch exhaust always split because of the engine moving under torque loadings and rain meant misfires. Had to change the rear subframe - horrible job. Sold it buy a Lotus Elan +2 which was much easier to keep in good condition!
What car is that?
