Rear brake dust shields

Hi all

Some advice please...

My rear brake dust shields look like the doilies my grandmother used to have on her tables and I suspect they would be an advisory at mot time.

My question is it just caliper, disc and shoes off to remove them for repair or does the hub have to come off too? It's not clear in the service notes.

They are made of unobtainium and when they get too bad people just remove them, it wont cause any issues at MOT time. When I used to do track days in another car I used to remove them anyway, it never caused any issues.

Hi Andy,

I treated mine with a rust chemical then filled the holes with fibreglass filler and painted with black rustoleum paint. They still look good 3 years on.

I did have the hubs removed from the car as was replacing and refurbing suspension and bushes at the time but you could probably get enough access on the car with the brake caliper and disc removed. It will depend on how you plan to repair them.

The only bit that was rusty was the shield its self. The rest of it where the drum brakes are was nice and solid.

Anthony - yes it appears just the outer part so I may get away with JB Weld or similar epoxy, but thanks for confirming hubs off job which is what I'd thought. They really need to come off the car to do a proper job.

As Bash says though I'll remove them completely if they are really bad. Brake squeal is getting worse so needs a strip and clean anyway.

The dust shields carry the handbrake mechanism, cannot be removed for a road car.

Yes I just want to remove for repair to outer part - if repair not practical I will have to grind off outer section only as the centre holds the handbrake cable abutment as you say.

Fortunately centre part looks solid so fingers crossed...

The outer part which forms the disc dust shield is thinner gauge steel and spot welded to the, heavier, inner plate which carries the handbrake mechanism.

It is possible to trim away the outer part in situ as you suggested.
