Looks like it is on the continent.
Prices abroad always appear higher than UK, but £38k is really pushing it.

I show that to the management, it will help justify all my recent spending on my old crate!

Well to be fair, an Elan Sprint is a relativel crude construction compared to the Excel, Esprit n/a are creeping beyond £30K and they don't drive as well, Esprit Turbo have become out of reach for many, the Excel is rare.
Plus Harry Metcalfe thinks the Excel is cool and he doesn't even blink when handing over £50K+ for his classics.

Re: silly prices being asked
Not so silly if you are selling.
Here in Spain an Excel goes for about 20.000€, but they do not sell because no-one knows what an Excel is, most
onlookers think it is a Ferrari.
A major reason for no buyers is the normally Right hand drive, an original LHD Excel (or Elite) is never less than 22.000€ due
mainly to high importation taxes and Concessionar profits at initial sale date. It is also a secret how spare parts are readily available at
reasonable prices.
If you want to export I suggest you change to LHD, not a difficult task, made easier if you can find a LHD wiring loom and pedal box.
Also if anyone knows where I can find a LHD fibreglass fascia please let me know, although reworking a RHD fascia to LHD is feasable.
I am considering buying a second hand RHD fascia to modify to LHD and then swop, retaining the original to be able to restore to ooriginal condition.
And now with Brexit no-one knows what import regulations apply to UK vehicles coming to Europe.
Dave the cog.

Re: silly prices being asked
Yes prices are going crazy here over the pond. Especially for LHD.
I saw some Excels LHD in very good nick for +-25000€. And they stay for ages on the net.
But the rule is still here: "The price is what the nut want to give fore it" (or something like that translated from Dutch)
