This should be a quick question.. Were any of the excel variants ever fitted from the factory with anything other than the Toyota brakes that are on my 1990 example? the service notes don't seem to think so but the set of pads for a 'Lotus Excel SA' look nothing like the ones on my car, being for a fixed caliper. The applications on the box state that they are for a Lotus Execl, Elite, E-Type and Rover P5B among others..

Lotus elite et al brakes are totally different from excel/ toyota brakes. You have the wrong pads thats why they are different.

Ps, sa brakes are the same as se brakes. The correct pads are often marked as toyota celicasupra ma61 pads, 1985ish vintage. Some esprits also use the same brakes.

As I thought.. just needed to check, they were sold on Ebay as being for the Lotus Ecxel SA.. and they are not!

Ebay sellers are notorious for listing things for lotus cars that are wrong, if its from one of the recognised lotus people they are usually ok, but be careful with other stuff.
Ive seen stuff like.....
Airbag bypass modules
Abs sensors
Huge stereos that wont fit
Airbags
Tins of spotted paint
Adding on files
Vernier hammers
I might have made the last 3 up, but you get the picture.
Perhaps we need a thread of stupid things that are listed, including me obviously.

That reminds me, as I have replied to the sellers saying they are the wrong pads, they have asked for my registration to try an wriggle out of it when they find my car is a SE not an SA as in the ebay listing.. so can I 'borrow' an SA registration?

My South African based car registration would throw that system into a big wobbly I suspect!

The pads I bought for my car were Ferodo FDB306 - they fit the calipers for my SA, but have never been used yet....

You don't need an SA reg. SE and SA pads are the same so if they wriggle then suggest they no nothing about the business they are in and, because you have been misled, you are opening an eBay (or PayPal) claim?

It also does not need to be an SA, as I believe the label just reverted to SE with auto box on later models

G682CLC is a scrapped auto SE

I know as I got the throttle and speedo cables :)

While at it it. I recently bought a set of Bosch drills which could not even drill through butter.
The drill bit shaft in a Bosch drill sheared the metal off the drive plain shaft indicating a deficient metal quality.
The seller did not want to know, in Spain it is harder (non-productive to complain) and refunds do not work.
After complaining to Bosch, they simply, after insisting, provided another better quality set of drills, again made in China.

I now try to find European manfactured products, and no longer buy Bosch.

I suspect these days there's a lot of counterfeit goods out there. Just because it says Bosch on the box, it could still be a cheaply-made knock-off. Must be a nightmare for brands who are trying to maintain their reputation. That said, there are brands selling crappy goods and relying on the "brand name" alone to justify higher prices. As Mercedes and BMW found 20-odd years ago, that is a very short-sighted way of running a business.
