Excel Restoration by Neil Donaldson on Youtube.

Post by DavidOliver »

I have been watching the series of videos put on Youtube by Neil Donaldson.
Apart from personal opinion about his approaches to restoration I would draw attention to methods for jacking up the Excel and the need to ensure jacking under the body where it is vital to locate the jack under the body pillar and if there are no steel plate jacking points to use timber load spreaders of adequate thickness.
I also noticed that when lifting out the engine and gearbox the lifting rig was used to raise the complete unit much higher than necesary for unit removal and this can have the risk of the rig collapsing sideways when manoevoring over uneven pavements. The natural reaction is for someone to try to stop the collapse with terrible consequences.

Dave the cog.

I came across this one a few days ago as well. I haven't watched any of the episodes properly yet, but it looks as though I could learn plenty from the series.

There's this Elite based one (below) too. The camera work is a lot better than in the Excel one. In fact almost everything is a lot better, but this one's being done by a professional actor with a car hobby, so you'd expect it to be done well. Progress is slow, however, with just three episodes on the Elite so far, & I'm wondering if this is because he has so many other projects on the go, or perhaps he's realised the car needs a new chassis, & he's quietly dropped it from his Youtube show.

I am really enjoying what Neil is doing as I am following along behind, although I am still on step 1. preparing to to remove the engine.

I have so much to do and really worried about parts supply on my 1975 Elite.

I just hope there will be some parts left for my Elite.

cheers
