vacuum advance capsule

Post by Dwaynem884 »

It's no totally gone, but it is on it's way out and whilst we're in at the carbs, I may as replace it.

Lucas part no. 5440528

Has anyone sourced a good replacement? SJ's have them available but for kicking the back door of £50 all said and done, it makes me think again. A quick look on eBay shows that there are new ones there at half or quarter the price, or NOS Lucas units but with varying part numbers.

Can't help on the vac advance unit, but check the hall effect pick up wire closely and also the nylon castlation widget that drives the vac plate.
The wire particularly gave me much grief for many months (years) until I eventually replaced with new. Intermittent break in the wire.
What goes together.... Must come apart.

I got a replacement vacuum unit from Mini Sport

Seems to be out of stock at the moment but i'm sure there are other places you can get a vac unit for a 45D distribtor.

From some research I did in the dim and distant past on distributors, I recall that the vacuum advance units and the centrifugal advance weights are pretty much the same across the range - it is the advance springs that are different. Of course this may be different with Lotus!

New vacuum units are available for £8.50 from Powerspark on eBay for the Lucas 45D distributor.

Cheers, Richard

Thanks for the advice.

My main concern is that Lucas has a plethora of variations in their Vac units and one would assume these were all for a reason.

Spoke with Powerspark and they just have the one type for a 45D except for the mini specific one.

The distributor on the Excel is a 45DM4.

But if some has used those available such as yourself Tanz then maybe I'm just being a bit paranoid.
