1990 lotus excel SE

11/07 co1.918 hc 153 millege. 102939
5/08. 2.52. 162. 105292
3/11. 0.515. 341. 108958
3/13. 0.54. 520. 114971
5/16. 3.47. 279. 125193 failed first time high co2

Noticed missing emissions readings along side some mot certificates, also when clock went past 100,000 some testers could not work out odometer readings and just put what was visible, thus making it low millege car( not unfortunately)

1979 Lotus Eclat

March 2017 results:
CO level - 2.52%
HC level - 509ppm

Not sure how that is relatively, but MOT tester said it was pretty good :)

MOT pass today. Emissions given:

CO - 0.004
HC - 20

Too good to be credible?

Passed MOT today with nothing to be done. However Emissions were high and they adjusted the carbs to get it through then put them back as they were. This was despite cleaning the K&N for life air filter and putting new clean plugs in. Don't know what the initial result was but the final reading was.
CO 3.16% HC 685ppm Mileage 120,808
Cheers, Phil

Mine initially failed today at CO 4.167% - allowable limit stated as 3.5% for cars from 1/8/86 to 1/8/92
An advantage then for pre August 86 cars which only have to meet CO 4.5%

Quick tweek on carbs and it passed. HC 676

In 10 years of ownership mine has only passed the emissions test once. But I guess with 121,000 on the clock it gets more difficult. The last time my MOT guy said I clogged up his Gas Analyser   Good job he is sympathetic to classic cars - he owns an E Type.

If I were a Gov Inspector I'd ask to see these garage's calibration & QC data trail!

With the idle set so weak (<0.5% CO), even using the best mapped ignition with Iridium plugs, you might expect a misfire with very weakly-set, non-adaptive, carbs/DLHAs - the misfire should then push the HC upwards (unburnt fuel/secondary/poor combustion).

Apart from poor instrument calibration, it's not impossible for the operator to cynically cheat the system ... or attempt to hide incompetence (fear of failure). Unfortunately, I have seen all of these situations within mission-critical biomedical laboratories - so excuse me for thinking that errors, incompetencies, and cynical behavior must occur within (more than) one or two garages too?

Failed MOT today. Sticking drivers side rear calliper that they freed off but advised get new ones.

Nail in rear tyre but was bent over so tyre OK and the usual fail on Emissions

CO 5.85 (3.5 max allowed)
HC 222ppm

After some attention with a sonic screwdriver
CO 3.42
HC 562ppm
The mechanic said the car felt OK after leaning off the mixture screws so didn't adjust them back and I have to agree with him. Drove well on the way home. If I don't touch the carbs again for a year will it pass next time?
