NEC Restoration Show 2024 - Call for Volunteers

Post by rbgosling »

Good afternoon you Excellent lot!

The Resto show is now less than 3 weeks away. Can I have any volunteers to help be on the stand?

I should get confirmation next week on our exact number of exhibitor wristbands (there should be a bonus one or two thanks to publicity efforts), but as a starting point we get 2 for the organiser + 2 per car, so 8 wristbands per day. Priority of course goes to those who will be bringing cars (Pete B, Matt O, Mark R) plus organiser (me) and Alan M who will be doing carburettor rebuilding on a table.

If anyone who hasn't been to this (or the November NEC show) is considering coming, you will be very welcome! Some things to note:
  • Realistically we need to keep at least 3-4 people on the stand at any time, so there is more than ample opportunity to wander around and check out the rest of the show as well as hosting on the stand.
  • We don't run a rota for when people have to been there during each day, but make sure there are still enough people still on the stand before you disappear off.
  • A reasonable background knowledge of the cars is useful, as guests will ask all sorts of questions, but no-one is expected to be an expert or know everything!
  • You can volunteer for the whole 3 days, or just one or two days. If we get more volunteers than wristbands I'll share duties out as best I can to make sure everyone gets a shot.
  • It costs nothing to come along and volunteer (other than your own travel of course), and is a great way to get into this excellent show for nothing. Car parking at the NEC is exhorbitant, but we get 3 free parking passes which are transferrable and usually sufficient.
Add here (or PM or email me if you prefer) and once I have confirmation of wristband numbers I'll see where we are.

I will not be there on Sunday (I'll be on a 'plane!), so that opens up another slot. Alan M has very thoughtfully volunteered to take all the club display equipment away with him on Sunday evening, since I will not be there to do so.

Stu (Hawaiis0) - do you want to bring along those seat belt brackets to sell? Will you be volunteering to be on the stand?

I did 3 days last year but am happy to step down this year to let someone else go.
If you are stuck for volenteers I am happy to do 2 days this year. Any 2 of the 3 days whatever suits you.
Cheers, Phil

I offer my services to help with the build up and on Saturday.

Its likely that Martin ??? from his Grand Thrift Auto YouTube channel will be coming on the stand on the Saturday to discuss making a video acknowledging 50 years of the Lotus Wedge Shaped Cars.

Have you had a chance to see his video about the M50 project - The amazing story of the Lotus Elite https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRmM6hFW_MA&t=337s

Many thanks for all your offers to help - in the end there were a few more offers than wristbands, so Phil - thanks for you offer but this time we'll let you off, and Tony, I've put you down for Saturday only (but you can swap to a different day if preferred).

The order of service for each day is:

Friday 22nd:
  • Richard Gosling
  • Pete Boole
  • Matt Oxley
  • Jake Oxley
  • Mark Robinson
  • Alan McKenzie
  • Stu Hawaiis0
  • And one wristband retained for Sara Helmer (Ollie Winterbottom's sister) as our guest.
Total: 8

Saturday 23rd:
  • Richard Gosling
  • Pete Boole
  • Matt Oxley
  • Jake Oxley
  • Mark Robinson
  • Alan McKenzie
  • Stu Hawaiis0
  • Tony Dakin
  • Marcus Horrell
Total: 9

Sunday 24th:
  • Pete Boole
  • Matt Oxley
  • Jake Oxley
  • Mark Robinson
  • Alan McKenzie
  • Stu Hawaiis0
  • Andrew Harris
  • Richard Woolaston
Total: 8

We have just 3 car park passes for show open days (parking is free on build-up day). I will be coming by train, to reduce demand for these. If demand for these passes exceeds supply, we will have to negotiate / share / use the classic method of two people driving out together, then after the barrier the passenger jumps out of the car and takes the pass before driving their own car out.

Stand display equipment - Thanks Alan for offering to look after this, but Richard W has volunteered to come along on Sunday, so it makes more sense for him to take it home at the end.

Build-up day - I'm expecting car displayers (Pete, Matt, Mark) to be there, along with myself (bringing display equipment), Richard W if he has merchandise to drop off (unless it's easier to drop the merch with someone else who is coming?), Marcus you will be most welcome but if it's any faff to come along I'm sure we will have enough bodies to get it done.

If anyone can't make any of these, or if you'd rather do a different day, this is all adaptable, so please let me know.

Wristband admin:

For build-up, wristbands are handed out at the door without restriction, you need to either scan a copy of the Site Rules (not sure if this can be seen without my login?) with your smartphone on arrival, or bring a paper copy with you. Bring decent footwear (not trainers, apparently), and a hi-viz vest/jacket if you have one; I will bring spare hi-viz vests in case anyone doesn't.

Show open day wristbands - I will collect all of these from the office on Thursday. For any others there on Thursday I can give you your wristbands then, otherwise I'll hand them out on your arrival. For Andrew Harris and Richard Woolaston, I'll leave your wristbands with Matt Oxley, you'll have to call him when you arrive at the show and he can meet you at the entrance with your wristband.

I could try a special order!
