Excel Fuel Cap Assembly

Post by Dwaynem884 »

Hello gents,

My car never came with a fuel cap, just one of those cheap service station emergency caps. I got one from Lotusbits a year or so ago that they reassembled from different bits that they had. But it sits very loose and when the tank is full, petrol actually comes out given the mess down the rear quarter panel. My big concern is if petrol can get out, what can get in! Does anybody have a breakdown/pictures of all that's in the cap assembly. Maybe I'm missing a part or it's been assembled wrong.

I got my cap to fit snugly by fitting an extra black rubber seal on top of the original one and by slightly bending the metal tabs which engage on the fuel filler pipe.

Yes, it was this photo on your post that peaked my interest. I definitely don't have that black circular piece on mine, not there anyway..

Then I think you need filler cap seal A082L6204S; £5 from SJs plus a £100 to ship

Not sealing and spilling as you mentioned is an MOT failure here.

oh no, not the seal, I have that. I mean the black part closest to you in the photo, held by the two screws.

In the lock assembly in front of the tumblers should be an o ring seal, if thats missing it will also leak.

It's not underneath the metal plate is it ? ie built upside down?

Damn - my cap has also always leaked (particularly when driven "enthusiastically" on a track, which has had me black-flagged a couple of times). I'd better check to see if it's the same with mine!

The sealing rubbers do also go hard, perish and crack allowing fuel to leak. I’ve replaced all of mine.
