Fitting new rear wheel bearings

Post by CJG in WOB »

The saga of the ‘85 Excel continues…

After a rear wheel bearing failed just before a rally 😡, the car is now up on the ramp at my local garage specialising in British classic cars. We have been able to obtain a set of suitable bearings from SKF, but will have to re-use the crush sleeve. Apparently, the usual practice is to use shims to re-crush this. New crush sleeves appear to be unobtainable. Does anyone know what dimensions of shim we should use?

Thanks.

I may have a shim left over from my Excel ownership - I'll dig it out later - if it's still there!

Thanks. That would be most helpful.

I've just re-dismantled and examined the Excel rear hub. The shaft diameter at the point where you would place a shim (on top of the crush sleeve) is 30.00mm. You need enough shim to ensure that the nut doesn't run out of thread before you've crushed the sleeve enough. Hope this helps.

Thank you.

I don’t suppose you would happen to know how long the crush sleeve was when it was new, before it was crushed?

Just out of interest, how thick are your shims? Just so that I have a reference point…

If I read the workshop manual correctly, maximum torque for the nut should be 197 Nm (145 lb ft).

There weren't any shims on mine - I thought there was. I don't know the original length of the crush sleeve - perhaps you can find it in some Toyota literature. Don't forget that the torque on the nut has very little to do with the setting of the bearing preload. Do you have a lbf.inch torque wrench to measure the rotation resistance?

I think I may have measured mine the last time I did one, I will check tomorrow. I have to say though that after meticulously following the manual about a month later Ive always ended up nipping them up a bit more after they had settled down.

Does the lenght really matter? I would assume the force the sleeve exerts on the bearings is pretty constant as long as it yields in the bulge. So before assembly, lenght of the spacer plus sleeve should be slightly longer (to make it yield again) than the space between the bearings with the nut tightened

New spacer 56.5mm long. Hope that helps.

You just beat me to it - I must have been measuring the one new one I have as you wrote this. Can confirm mine is also 56.5mm long
Also outside diameter of the bulge is 45mm

My experience is the same as Bash's - extreme care taken to set up and still had to nip up about 200 miles later. I hate crush sleves. Just doing a diff now with 3 :(

I have a bit of play in my N/S rear wheel bearing (a bit of movement if you grab the wheel at 12 and 6 o clock). Is this something I can adjust out (and how?) or is it a new bearing job?
And again how? Is there a decent how to guide on here or elsewhere? I couldn't find one when I looked.
