For all those wiring gremlins we love, this is the place to discuss them.

Dash Lights

Post by P34Fan »

Hi gents, I have a 1983 model Excel and the dash lights are almost non existent, all the bulbs have been changed and the rheostat is wound all the way around.
I've gathered from older posts that the lights & rheostat are flakey to say the least, so am I better off bypassing the rheostat and setting the lights to maximum illumination?
Next question how do you bypass the rheostat, i assume it is by bridging the wires going to it, but which ones?

There is a thread on an Alfa forum where an owner achieved great results by taking the instruments apart and lining the inside with reflective foil. In the end he also fitted LEDs which to be honest were a bit overkill, simply lining them out improved things by about 400%.

Has anyone taken a Smiths guage apart before?
