Really nice interior. I would not have painted the waistline trim red myself but otherwise a great looking S1

Thats a lot of Lotus Excel for the money, and a damm good car to buy .
Cannot believe it's not more money !!
These cars are so undervalued at the moment, and I don't think it will stay that way for too much longer.

It will need an engine rebuild fairly soon if it hasn't already had one.

Thats one of the problems with the Excel, they can very expensive very quickly. I gave mine up because it needed substantial investment and in standard form they're not particularly quick. That said I would have another one because they are a treat to drive on the twisties!

Can you define "fairly soon"? either in terms of mileage or time? And what sort of items would constitute the rebuild?
Mine is only a few K miles behind that one.

:? all cars can be very expensive very quickly, rather depends on how well its been maintained and driven, iam sure you could destroy any new car within 50,000miles if you used it and abused it

The four of the Esprit owners (OK one is an ex-owner as he now has an Exige) were drooling over the Elite Riviera in the mag while we were in the pub last night. It still seems so wrong that Excels, Eclats and Elites that are in mint condition are so cheap to buy.

Any old car will need more maintenance than a new one, as far as millages go, when chatting about engines with P Matty a while back he reckoned 80 to 100k on a espirt engine before a rebuild if well maintained, i assume with the excel making lower power, you could add another 20k to that, and some on here are past 100k miles with no issues, but i'm guessing most 912's will need some kind of attention when they get up to these kind of millages

Most cars from the Excels period are not that fast either, HP has increased significantly since then and most cars now have between 50 to 100% more power than they used too, M3's are now into the 400bhp range, back in the 80's it was like 190/200

Ferrari 328's were like 250hp or so, now the V8 class of ferraris are in the 450, soon to be 550 bhp range, even hot hatches now sport 225 hp or more as standard, which is more than most 80's sportcars 944, M3, Excel etc

I like my Excel for the shape and character, it's an agriculteral drive compared to modern cars but all classic's are, as far as performance and handling go, the car has long been superceded by modern machines, the Excel was pretty old school even in the 80s (twin carbs, when injection was the norm) but now thats less of an issue or even a + point, as these are the things that give the car it's character, sound and feel, and any 80's teck feels old now, better to be old in-efficient and characterful than just old and in-efficient

Ultimately there are better cars out there than the Excel, but if you want a sporty slice of the 80's it's a decent choice, and the carb fed engine has more character than most injected 4 pots, from the era, and underated car i think
