Leather Paint

I'm just making a start on re-furbing the upholstery and on removing one of the rear seat squabs it looks as if the colour has been "painted" on so much that worn areas are flaky. I've had a chat with the folk at Woolies as to the removal of the coating and they are a little perplexed as to the best way. Paint Stripper!!?? Cellulose thinners!!?? Any ideas anyone?

Ive just removed the black coating from my esprits very dark brown/grey leather. Celullose did the job, so well in fact some bits you could almost put hide food on and not bother recolouring. Just be carefull not to get too much on the stitching. The put lots of hide food on and leave for days/weeks to soak in. However if the coating is not celullose based it may have no effect at all!!!

Cellulose is right for 1990 leather. If you want to re-finish in cellulose Furniture Clinic do it, but you have to ask for solvent based or else they default to water based.

Thanks for that guys. I'll give it a try this weekend provided we are not burried under several feet of snow! I'll let you know how it goes!

Well folks this is going to be one messy job! Cellulose thinners didn't touch what ever the seat had been coated with even when gently rubbing in the cellulose with some 0000 grade wire wool! I've resorted to some Blackfriars self-neutralising paint stripper and it's worked a treat! Tons of gooey gunge coming off. I have cleaned all reside off with the wire wool soaked in cellulose and then a dry cloth. It's dried out now and revealed some lovely leather! Problem now is I'll have to strip out most of the upholstery it's all been painted with bloddy stuff! If I could get my hands on the person that did this I'd.............
I would suggest anybody with a similar problem first thing is to put on a pair of Marigolds! It really is messy!
