It would be worth it just to ditch the inboard drums! My Eclat chassis is covered in oil and perfect, but the Elites has a lot of rust despite being an S2. I think at some point the original owner rubbed down what he could (damaging the coating) and painted it with hammerite which is crap.

The factory only gave a 5 year warranty on the chassis, and galvanisation doesn't last forever. A chassis swap could be a definite long term possibility, but there are other pressing items to finish first.

Well chaps

Thanks for all your help - six weeks ago I had the desire to own a Lotus and now I have three!!

Perhaps I'll post some details on here when they're sorted if anyone's interested.

I'll hopefully get along to a York Club meet soon

Best regards

Simon

nothing wrong with the Elite.

nothing wrong with the parts either. ( ive had over 200 second hand cars with many of the parts used on these Lotus cars and their only ever a problem when their old n knackered as you would expect from anything in life).

BUT an old car, badly maintained and stored IS a pain by ANY manufacturer or model.

the S2.2 Elite is a completely different beast altogether and should not be compared to a very bad condition S1 in my humble opinion tho.

These old Elites passed through the hands of some pretty rubbish owners in the last few decades too.....have just discovered the spark plugs on my project Elite are welded in completely. Got two out, snapped one, one pending.......I would age them at early 1990s easily

when all is said and done, ( thats if you manage to get that rusted nut off and finish your repair :D ) , the reason u buy an older different car is simply that. that it IS different.

as i have said, ive had many old cars, lots of bruises, cuts, swearing and 'how the hell am i gonna do that on my own'.

but when the jobs done and you stand looking at your current love of a car, its all worth it!

you know it is! thats why u buy a specialist or unusual car is'nt it?

go buy a Lotus Elite. its unique, its a piece of art, its a Lotus and your never regret it................well apart from getting the rusty nuts and bolts undone!!!
