Fettling Door Window Frames

Post by muphy »

Thanks to Mr Foulds I have a copy of the Service Notes and courtesy of spav I also have access to the parts database and I've searched each which way on the forum but....

I've found that (not surprisingly), there is a lot of wind noise on the drivers side. If I grab the inner lip of the frame by the glass and pull then the frame moves in and the seal is good. I think that the door seals are pretty good though someone seems to have tried to glue draft excluder to the seal to reduce the draft but I'm wondering if anyone has been able to adjust the lateral position (angled in a wee bit) of the frame to get a better seal between the door frame and the body. Is it possible to shim/wedge the frame at the top(ish) of the door so that the frame slopes in slightly? Any gotchas??

Cheers,

Mark

Altering the angle of the frame can cause problems with window movement. Each frame is shimmed differently where it mounts to the door beam.

The door seals may look OK, but they may not be properly fitted (i.e. they're not pushed fully onto the body) and/or may have collapsed internally. If they give very easily when pushed, they've probably collapsed - a simple fix is to get some windscreen washer tube and feed it into the channel through a small cut (search for a thread on here about how to do it).

Another possibility is that the whole door needs a bit of adjustment to bring it into proper alignment - if your door beams haven't been replaced, this may well be the first sign that you need to start preparing for this delightful little job. If they have been replaced, the door may be just a little out of line.

And a final one - the window glass may not be rising into the fully closed position - time to get some silicone spray into the channel.

There is, however, almost always some wind noise if you're driving it properly.

You can try putting some washers between the door frame and beam where it bolts to it (top bolts). Fairly easy to do. Take the door card and inner panels off and all should become clear.... If the frame is very easy to pull in and out and the door itself moves as well, check the door beams. Both mine had rusted at the front bottom.
