Intermittant intermittant wipers

For all those wiring gremlins we love, this is the place to discuss them.

Intermittant intermittant wipers

Post by Richy B »

Wiper works ok on full and fast but will not park so need to be quick to stop it in the right place
On intermittant it goes and stops across the screen in irregular gaps.
I thinking its the motor but could it be the module or both, any ideas folks?

TIA
Richard

Park switch gone, get a new one from these peeps:

That's the easy part, getting the assembly out is a b**gger

What Hodders said! (I had the same problem - new park switch sorted it)

Yes and as getting the wiper motor out is such a bugger of a job, as an initial step I'd be inclined to find a nearby Excel owner and borrow their Pektron Derby wiper relay and their wiper switch (the stalk arrangement), both of which are relatively easy to get at....who knows, you might be lucky and narrow it down to one of those items

Thanks for the replies everyone will that solve the wiper stopping across the screen during intermittant wipe too? Dreaded the wiper motor removal but has to be done can see it tucked up behind the instrument panel (upsidedown head in footwell :D ), could do a few other jobs while its out I suppose too

Yes.
Good tips about the Pektron module (I tried that, thanks Lotusbits but it didn't fix it) and I suppose it could be the stalk ...but it will be the switch. May be a good idea to also order the brushes assembly from the same link as above, easily changed at the same time.
Several threads on here + photos about the saga of getting the assembly out, but tip #1: Remove the steering wheel, tip #2: thin wire or string around the wiper spindle, tip #3: do this job after the 9pm TV watershed on account of the swearing involved.

Wiper motor arrived from Lotus Bits, decided to replace bushes as motor was second hand so phoned the recommended source. The guy there says they don't sell them for the excel wiper motor as they are not always compatible, judging by the motor from Lotus Bits he's right! He gave me another phone number to ring, a guy who has a few discontinued Lucas parts, sounds like bits are becoming scarce for wiper bits

Recently came across a distributor for Lucas parts who were very helpfull when I was rebuilding the ignition amplifier. They quickly cross-referenced numbers and came up with the goods! They are "Auto Battery Service Ltd" of Rochdale. They also have depots in Sheffield, Altrincham and Oldham. Haven't checked but they may well do mail order.

New wiper motor fitted, working a treat, was deffinatly the park switch at fault,

I now have, intermittant wipe, with park and slow and fast permanent wipe.....with park, woohoo, happy bunny :D

Can I say though it was an absolute pain in the whatsit to change, never again!

Also fixed my Oil pressure sender unit while at it will post a new thread up showing a few pictures....

Thanks again for all your help, and to Hodders photos, them type of things are invaluable.

Cheers
Richard

It appears my wiper motor park switch has finally given up the fight.

Can anyone advise on how feasable it would be to replace just the switch whilst leaving the motor in situ on a 1991 SE ?

Hi if you mean the contact switch attached to the wheelbox, I'd say pretty much impossible.....but others may have succeeded. I vaguely recall that it's on the other (inaccessible) side when the motor's in-situ....but it's been a while
