Re: Dellorto DHLA 45 D Carburettor
I am a newbie to this but I do know that fitting carbs that take air from the top of the power unit will be taking VERY HOT air rather than the air that comes from the front of the car ....... RISK ... Sitting in a queue on a motorway you will burn out the entire top end ....
Strait in air take carbs are great for sound but they add very little to Mr Chapmans dream. In the early days motorways were highways not trafic jams
Only My £0.003p worth

This post makes little sense. DHLA45s are the standard carbs.bazzabizza wrote:I am a newbie to this but I do know that fitting carbs that take air from the top of the power unit will be taking VERY HOT air rather than the air that comes from the front of the car ....... Re: Dellorto DHLA 45 D Carburettor
Angus I think he must be referring to the air intake position rather than carb position?
Even so, although most of us know by now it's best to stick with the std airbox and std intake position, using open K&Ns at the "top of the engine" is unlikely to result in burning out the top end on an n/a engine like the 912, although the point about running in traffic is one of the big issues resulting in variable / rich mixtures with open K&Ns.
Also maybe he's thinking about stuff he's heard regarding hot intakes and turbo charged engines ?

Re: Dellorto DHLA 45 D Carburettor
Just before i start my post i don't want any rolling eyes from Peter..............
Dependent on your year/model you could revert back to the earlier air box as the entry is some what larger, but in general practice you should be taking the air from in front of the radiator via piping (i use 4" flue pipe) and your standard air box, this should prevent any (particularly hot and thus less dense air getting in to the engine), i ran open K&Ns on mine for several years, and it did help the engine breathe better, with no sign of any over heating, i fitted a programmable controller for the fans so if stuck in traffic i could bring the fans on at a lower temp, but generally she was fine. this is what i have on at the moment

i have also seen an Excel taking air through the wheel arch on the Emerald3d ECU site
