Phone wiring

I'm planning to install a couple of extra power points (fed up of clouting the big plug in the cigar lighter socket with my knuckles every time I change through 3rd) in my car this weekend and I'm feeling lazy - does anyone happen to know the voltages/amperages and connector type for the "cellular telephone" connector in the passenger footwell ?

4-pin connector for battery, auxiliary, panel light illumination and earth. Connector for the socket is Rists P/No51150006. Terminals 51101169. Max currents are 1 amp for panel illumination (red/brown), 15 amps for earth (black), 10 amps for auxiliary 12V (yellow/green) and 10 amps for ignition 12V (brown). Fuseholders for the battery and auxiliary supply are fitted ahead of LH door hinge post and accept 'Littel' type fuses

From the diagram they seem to be the standard blade-type push in fuse.

Can't believe how long it's taken me to get round to finally doing this. I guess the even longer/fatter than normal plug on the latest SatNav spurred me into action. (coupled with a couple of hours to spare this afternoon).

It works - I have two properly fused 12V supplies in the glove box now, one switched on the aux. circuit and one direct from battery (could be handy for battery conditioners). Routing the wiring down to the plug, around the heater fan, is a bit tight but doable. Now I need to pluck up courage to put some holes in the glovebox back board to make the sockets a permanent fixture.

It's an easy job if you can find the right connector for the plug and seems, to me, to be a better option than splicing into the cigarette lighter circuit.

In fact, if anyone wants, I could make them up a nice little plug in loom.

FWIW - I now have a bluetooth adapter (Clarion BLT373) installed, and still have two "accessory" sockets (one switched on unswitched) available ;p

I shall be showing them to the citizens of Maranello, shortly.

Hi Angus, I am very interested in this upgrade and the design of the plug-in loom. We haven't been out much as a family in the Excel this year, but my daughters seem unable to cope without USB charging points for mobile phones, ipods and so forth, so I need to add 12V sockets.

It's really very easy to do Chris - I have a spare connector for the main loom (finding a source for that plug was the tricky bit) and can get a couple of 12V sockets to add to the other end. The only thing you have to watch is that only one socket is switched, the other is a permanent live - but it wouldn't be hard to put a double socket on the switched feed if necessary.
