1992 Excel valuation

Post by kkv444v »

In a bid to rationalise my car collection, and because I don't really have time to do everything, I have been considering offering my Excel for sale.

Pictures here:

So, it's a run-out model in Silk Red and full gold tan perforated leather. The paintwork has suffered the infamous lacquer peel and is therefore not perfect. A re-spray (or possibly a re-lacquer) would be welcome but due to the dark colour it is actually not bad from a few feet (I have applied some paint-can lacquer in places).
The leather also could do with some attention; the driver's bolster shows the wear of 140,000 miles, the rear seat back has splits on the top seam as does the dashboard. The leather is discoloured in places but is liveable.
New carpets have been fitted.
The headlining is slightly saggy above the passenger.

Now the important bit! The engine was rebuilt and refitted at the start of last year. Standard spec, partly built by a Lotus technician and finished off, tested and dyno'd by the guru, Phil Davison (Ravic Engines, WRC championship-winning engine builder). It is a gem, and cost me not far short of the asking price!

New parts fitted as part of its recommission in Jan 2016 and since include clutch plus slave and master cylinders, brake discs + pads, tyres, throttle cable, speedo cable, battery, diff seals, otter switch + housing, steering rack gaiters, exhaust centre + other sections, oil cooler pipes.

AC has not been touched so condition is unknown.

But, it's a complete car with an MOT and is perfectly useable. Much more money spent on it in the past two years than it is worth. The engine is the biggest asset to my car (albeit not the original block).

Original, complete tool kit plus owner's manual still with the car.

I have owned the car for twelve years, by the way, and I know the previous owners back to 1998.

i would not accept less than 5500gbp, if the dyno test showed that the engine produced the lotus claimed 180 bhp and 160 ft lb on the dyno be sure to mention it as very few do or did even when new. fixing the paint would not be cost effective (respray 3000 to 6000) but fixing the electrical faults and getting the ac to work probably would and should allow you to get another 500, even if no price increase would certainly make the car easier to sell.

I was going to say the description sounds identical to The (my) Lady!! Then saw your mention of it. Don had put a lot of cash in the motor/clutch as well (done by LB) and aside from a minor upper Cam carrier leak, the engine has been the most reliable part of the car (still working out what happened to the trans/clutch a few weeks ago - a result of driving 140mph). Alan's estimate is on target with my evaluation as well. Were the door beams replaced? That could add some value.

Door beams are original. Passenger side would benefit from a replacement, though, as there is a bit of flex.

Fuel pump is new in the past month, too. (I have updated the original post with a few more new bits from last year.)
