help with my engine please

Post by stew »

can someone please help,i am not too mechacically minded but the last week i have had an awfull metal clanging noise comeing out especially when i give it a second run.
today the noise got worse i was hopeing it would go away or maybe needed oil, anyway i pulled up on the drive lifted the bonet and could hear a noise that i shouldnt.
it was coming from the front ot the engine right at the front.
i turned it off and there are 3 or 4 round wheels which the belt goes round.
the one right in the middle of the car with 4 nuts holding it on and one nut in the middle is completely loose.
i can move the whole wheel and i think its only the belt stopping me from pulling it off.
i might be wrong and this is normal but i dont think so.
can any one give me advice or had similar problem please
thanks very much

I think you are talking about the water pump pulley.

If the 4 bolts are loose just tighten them, however I suggest that your water pump may have failed. Normally they start to leak and you will notice water loss or a small puddle when the car is stopped.

If it is the water pump you will have to remove the power steering belt and then the fan belt to get at it and then its relatively easy to unbolt.

However be careful as if the pump has failed the car could overheat, also if its as loss as you say then it may fail all together and get caught up in the Cam belt....and thats really bad news.

i think you are right as i put in half watering can of water tonight and also for the last week the temp gauge has been at 3/4 and its always been at 1/2.
but would it make terrible metal clanging noise?

Most definitely if the bearings have failed, or the shaft broken, or the impeller broken inside, as its still being spun by the fan belt.

If you want to be certain, remove the fan belt and start the engine...don't drive it as it will overheat, just run it for a few seconds. No noise means thats the problem.
